'Since the kids are not at home, I can stay with Nancy in the mansion in the suburbs for one night,' thought Charles.
It was quiet there and Nancy could take a rest.
Everyone felt better in a new environment.
Without thinking too much, Nancy agreed.
Charles bought some food and came early to pick up Nancy.
He kept checking the time. The consequence of being a doctor was that, she had to stay in the hospital for God-knows-how-long, when she performed surgeries.
The hospital staffs got off work, but Nancy was still working.
It was already dark outside.
Charles took an umbrella and walked into the outpatient building. He wanted to go upstairs and check what time Nancy would be off duty.
Also, he needed to go to the bathroom.
A few minutes later, Nancy came out of the elevator and walked down the stairs with the help of Erin.
Nancy had thought that Charles would pick her up. But as he was a busy man, it was possible that he had something urgent to deal with. Unfortunately, when she went downstairs, she didn't see him. She hailed a taxi with Erin.
When Charles came out from the washroom and went upstairs, Nancy had already left.
Shaking his head, Charles rushed to the ground floor to catch up with the taxi, but he didn't know where it was heading.
Since Erin's apartment was nearby, the taxi driver sent her home first.
Charles tried to chase them, but he lost the taxi, so he gave up and drove to their villa in the suburb.
It was getting darker and the rain poured heavier.
Nancy was exhausted from standing the whole day.
She leaned against the window and nearly drifted to sleep.
Because of this, she lost track of time.
It was gloomy when she arrived at the villa.
"Miss, I don't think there is anyone living here." The driver glanced at the villa, then turned to Nancy with worry in his eyes.
It was not a good idea for such a fragile girl to come here all by herself.
When Nancy looked at the flickering lights, she thought that Charles might be there. 'Should I just leave?' she thought. But she dismissed her own idea.
Every time she entered the operating room, she would turn off her phone.
This had become a habit.
With a sigh, she turned it on and called Charles.
While preparing for dinner, Charles heard the phone rang. When he figured it was Nancy, he answered it in a hurry.
"Charles, are you in the suburban villa now?" Nancy asked.
"Yes, I'm preparing dinner!"
Excitement was obvious is his voice.
"Well, it's good that you're home. I'm here..."
As she was about to push the car door open, a bolt of lightning lit up the sky followed by a roaring thunder.
Nancy heard a loud thud.
"Hey, Charles, what's wrong?" she asked anxiously.
But she didn't hear his voice.
"What's happened to you?" Her first thought was, Charles had a fall, so she hurried to the villa with an umbrella in her hand.
As if on cue, darkness filled the room as soon as she entered the house.
"Oh my God! I got caught in a downpour, and now the electricity is off. Are you kidding me?" Nancy began to explore in the dark.
