Simon stretched out his naked body and assumed a human form beneath the rounded red moon.
Why would a human be selected to be the Alpha's mate? He pondered.
Why would the moon goddess be so cruel to him when she knew how he had hated humans for years?
Lunas cannot be humans. It didn't make sense at all to Simon.
He was the next in line following the passing of his parents. He rose to the position of pack leader, and now his Luna would be a human? A human would be his partner?
Simon scoffed. How could the moon goddess do this to him? How could his wolf be drawn to a human?
He was about to return to where he had left his clothes—in the leaves—when he felt something sharp beneath his feet. When he looked down to see what it was, he discovered it to be a phone and beside it was a pink handkerchief.
As he knelt down to pick it up, Simon scoffed once more.
He picked the handkerchief up and saw the embodiment "Scarlett O'Hara" written on it with white treads, but it was at the bottom of the handkerchief and it was written so tiny.
Then there was a deafening beep coming from the phone beside him. He groaned and stood so he could slam the phone with his leg, however when he saw messages appear on the phone's screen, he refrained from doing so.
He picked up the phone and the word "Avery" was illuminated on the screen. Scarlett's phone had no password and Simon was able to see the message that Avery had sent.
'Where are you, Scarlett? We can't find your car outside Tucker's house. Are you all right? Please call me when you see this.' she ended the text with a Kissing lip-rounded yellow thingy Simon didn't know what in heaven it was.
"Humans. Stupid creature." He turned off the phone before heading for the trees.
He returned to the Bright Moon settlement after changing into his clothes.
"Alpha." When Mace saw Simon, he was walking up to him while holding a long robe. "How did the haunting go?" As he walked alongside Simon, Mace encircled Simon's body in the clothing.
Simon scowled. "It wasn't fun." He almost killed his mate by biting her to death, but he was unable to tell his best friend. Where would he begin? No wolves would be happy if he revealed that their future Luna was a human.
"I took note. You don't have any human parts or any blood on you. What happened out there? Every time you leave for your haunt, you always bring a piece back with you and hang it in the public square as a reminder of your hatred for humans."
Simon sighed as he walked into the mansion.
"I finally got it," said Mace. "It is the red moon. Anybody you bite will have to change into one of us even if they don't want to."
Mace was right, and if Simon hadn't been so hateful, he would have known that the moon was red before allowing Scarlett to leave without killing her. He yelled, "Shit!" and slammed his hand into the desk.
He had left Scarlett alone. If the bite does not kill her, she will transform into a werewolf. However, Simon wished for her to die so he wouldn't have to choose a human as his mate.
Mace sat down across from him and inquired, "What is wrong?" He could see Simon's facial expression, which made it easier for him to understand what Simon had done. "What were you thinking? Keeping that human alive?"
With his hands, Simon massaged his eyes. "I know. Mace, I should have killed her, but I had no idea what happened. This time, I didn't want to kill her. I don't know why."
"You remember how the last time Anton made the same mistake, the human he transformed turned rogue and terrorized this community? Wait... did you just say "Her"?"
Simon guessed that Mace understood what he said. Oh, fuck. How did Mace manage to notice that word? This question won't be ending now. He sighed.
He caught Mace's eyes and quickly averted them. The only wolf to whom he could display his sensitive side was Mace. Not only was Mace his best friend, but Simon also saw him as his brother and adviser.
