Daniel was taken away, and Brittany felt like there was a hole in her heart.
When William heard the news, he was a bit bummed too, "Don't worry, he's got his dad. We'll have plenty of chances to see him."
Brittany knew Daniel would have to leave sooner or later, but she didn't expect it to hit her so hard.
William took her out for a meal to cheer her up and then drove her back to the apartment.
Upon entering, the nanny was surprised not to see Daniel. She asked, "Where's Daniel?"
"His dad came back and took him."
Seeing Daniel's favorite toy on the table, Brittany's heart sank even deeper.
The nanny sympathized with her and comforted her before clocking out.
William made Brittany a hot cup of milk and brought it to her room. It was clear she had been crying.
"Don't cry. We'll talk to Daniel's dad tomorrow. We'll still have plenty of chances to see him."
Brittany took the hot milk and responded, "You've got your cousin's wedding to prepare for, right? You don't have to go. We can talk to him after the wedding."
The wedding was fast approaching. There was no time for delays.
William hesitated for a bit, "Okay."
After drinking the hot milk, Brittany felt a bit more composed.
"Can you manage being home alone tonight?" William wanted to stay with her, but he didn't want to overstep his bounds.
"I'll be fine." Brittany appreciated his thoughtfulness, but she honestly didn't have the energy for lovey-dovey stuff at that moment.
William didn't press further. After a few more words of concern, he left.
After William left, Brittany opened the door to the children's bedroom. It almost felt like she could still smell Daniel. Her heart ached.
