Daniel seemed to sense her sadness. His small hands wrapped tightly around her neck as he whimpered quietly.
Brittany was crying so hard she couldn't control herself. Her whole body was trembling.
They held each other tightly, crying for a while. Then Daniel held back his tears and reached out to wipe Brittany's away, "Mom, don't cry; it makes me really unhappy."
Did he do something wrong to make his mom so upset?
He had been crying just a minute ago, so his eyes red-rimmed and his nose pink, looking utterly pitiful.
Brittany hastily wiped her tears and reached out to him, "Can I eat the gift you gave me?"
"Of course."
Daniel opened the box and took out a small cake, presenting it solemnly to Brittany.
Brittany knew the cakes Emily made were delicious, and this one was no exception.
She took a bite through her tears, her eyes glistening, "This is really yummy, thank you, Daniel."
Daniel beamed, giving Brittany a sloppy kiss. Her face was covered in slobber, but it felt incredibly sweet.
Isaac stood outside the lounge and saw them huddle together. There was a touch of sadness in his eyes.
Brittany hadn't recovered yet. He looked at the time and thought it best for her to rest.
He went over to them, "Go get some rest first. You haven't recovered yet."
Brittany didn't feel like talking to Isaac. She wanted to keep holding Daniel, but her body was too weak.
Reluctantly, she stood up, leading Daniel back to her room.
Back in her room, a nurse re-administered her IV. Daniel climbed up onto the bed, quietly staying by Brittany while his eyes were darting around.
"Mom, are you sick?" He asked.
"Um, I'm just a bit under the weather."
Brittany's attention was almost entirely on Daniel.
Isaac walked in. Seeing them huddled together, he frowned, "Daniel, it's late, you should go."
He didn't like that all her attention was on Daniel.
