After the call was cut, Brittany was a bit taken aback. It was over just like that?
Now that Daniel got the green light, he grabbed Abby's hand and said, "Let's hit the road, Abby."
Abby obediently nodded and followed behind Brittany.
Once the kids hopped in the car, they were chatting away happily. Brittany was worried sick before about Daniel not having friends, but it seemed like he had found his own posse now.
Brittany took the kids to the restaurant, ordered two kid's meals, and found a nice window-side spot to settle in.
The restaurant even had a mini-playground. It was basically kiddie heaven.
While waiting for their meals, Daniel took Abby to the playground and got stuck into some games.
The restaurant was pretty well designed. They had glass walls all around, so you could see everything happening in the playground.
Brittany didn't stop them; she just ordered a cup of coffee and sat back, sipping leisurely.
About half an hour later, the kids returned, their arms full of plush toys.
Daniel picked out the prettiest one and gave it to Brittany. "Mom, I won these for you."
Brittany, smiling, accepted the toy, gave Daniel a peck on the cheek, and praised him. "You're the man, Daniel!"
Daniel was all sweaty from playing, but his eyes were sparkling with excitement.
Abby also had a plush toy, but she looked a bit down.
Brittany guessed it was probably because she didn't have her folks with her.
Brittany walked up to Abby, squatted down, and said, "Abby, you're awesome too. Can I give you a hug?"
Abby immediately perked up, and her face turned red as she hugged Brittany. Brittany returned the hug, put her in a seat, and said, "Let's tuck in."
Daniel sat up straight.
The three of them enjoyed a hearty dinner, and by the time they finished, it was nearing seven o'clock.
With Abby's mom still a no-show, Brittany let the kids go back to the playground while she waited.
