Isaac locked eyes with her and was momentarily at a loss for words. His lips were pressed tightly together as he tried to negotiate with Brittany but to no avail.
The atmosphere was tense.
Brittany no longer had the energy to converse with Isaac. She buried her face in her hands and leaned against the wall. Her mind was filled with thoughts of Daniel.
Time seemed to stretch on endlessly.
Daniel finally emerged from the ER.
Brittany wiped her tears and approached the doctor. "How's my son?"
The doctor removed his surgical mask. "A slight concussion, but we've dressed the wounds on his face. All in all, he's not too bad off."
Brittany let out a sigh of relief and thanked the doctor before asking for any special precautions she should take.
Daniel was transferred to a VIP room, and Brittany stayed by his side, fearful that if she didn't keep a close eye on him, she might lose him again.
Isaac stood guard outside the door until Nathan, hearing the news, arrived.
"Mr. Salter, my apologies."
His men had been close by at the kindergarten, but they'd received information from others in the afternoon, giving Leda's people an opportunity.
"This is the third time." Isaac looked at Nathan with a grim expression. "Deal with them. I don't want to see them again."
Nathan knew he had made a mistake. "Mr. Salter, I'm sorry, I should've…"
"Leave!" Isaac thought about Daniel's bruised face, his breath quickening. A wave of anger washed over him.
Nathan didn't dare to delay and hurriedly left.
Brittany stayed awake all night, all her thoughts on Daniel. Seeing the imprint of fingers on his cherubic face, she wished she could kill Leda herself!
As dawn approached, Isaac pushed open the door of the room and walked up to Brittany. "It's late. You should go home and rest."
Brittany was too engrossed in her thoughts to hear him. She gently touched Daniel's hand, bending down to kiss the back of it. Her eyes were filled with endless tenderness.
