Grace shook her head, her eyes tired yet resolute.

"Grandma, dinner's ready," Noel announced as he pushed open the door. Spotting Manuel in the room, he rolled his eyes. "What brings you here?"

Manuel, trying to appear endearing, said, "Noel…"

"Don't call me that." Noel chuckled dryly. "You bolted faster than a rabbit during the compatibility tests, but once a suitable donor was found, you're suddenly in the picture. You're really trying to play me, aren't you?"

Manuel's face flushed with embarrassment as his motives were laid bare.

"Just go home, will you?"

Grace, wishing to avoid any squabble, firmly showed him the door.

Without further ado, Manuel left, taking his bruised ego with him.

After he was gone, Noel approached Grace's bedside. "Grandma, you shouldn't bother with him. He's not worthy of being a Salter."

Cowardly and irresponsible.

His heart belonged only to Leda and her son. Had he ever thought of his own son? Or of Grace, his mother?

"My grandson is the one who's truly there for me."

Noel stayed by Grace's side in the hospital, giving Brittany a much-needed breather to return to her studio.

Kari updated her on their project, and just before leaving, she asked, "Brittany, how's Grace doing?"

"She's out of the woods, but she needs rest. If all goes well, she might have the transplant by the end of the month."

Kari nodded. "That's good to hear."

Kari paused and asked, "Does that mean Joie's back in the picture?"

Brittany felt like fate was playing cruel games, but for Grace's sake, she would tolerate Joie. "For now, yes."

Kari's lips thinned. "Is there a chance…"
