Claudia had just wiped down the tables and was now disinfecting the couch. Suddenly, her fingers trembling, she pleaded, "Allison, I didn't have a choice."
Allison turned around. The night wind hit her back, messing up her hair.
She looked at Claudia, "That bracelet might not be super expensive, but it's 18K white gold with diamond accents, from a known brand. You could still sell it for a pretty penny, even second-hand. At the Red Jack Club, we have rules. If you find something that belongs to a customer, you have to return it. If they find out, Claudia, there's not much I can do to help you."
Claudia clenched the cleaning cloth in her hands. She looked at Allison, her lips pale, "Allison, I know you're a good person. Please, don't tell the manager. I'm begging you."
She walked towards Allison, about to kneel. Allison jumped back in surprise, "Claudia!"
"My granddaughter is sick. Life's been tough. My son died, and my daughter-in-law got sentenced to four years in jail. My granddaughter suddenly found out she has a heart problem and needs surgery, which is very expensive. I've never saved up that much money in my life. When I saw that bracelet, I…” Claudia's eyes filled with tears as she spoke.
“Claudia, I'll pretend this never happened. But the Red Jack Club has cameras. Your job here is pretty stable, Claudia. Don't lose it over a bracelet. It's not worth it." Allison said.
"I know. I was about to take the bracelet to the front desk that day, but I heard that the cameras on the 5th floor were broken for two hours. Allison, if you don't tell anyone, no one will ever know. I beg you." Claudia was about to kneel again.
Allison quickly helped her up. She sighed quietly, "Alright."
Leaving the VIP room, she turned to look at Claudia who was still busy inside. That frail figure reminded her of her own mother. Her mother had also worked hard like this in the Flanagan family, doing all sorts of chores.
In the underbelly of this bustling city, many people had their own struggles. Those at the bottom felt it the most.
Allison didn't tell anyone about Claudia taking the bracelet. But the next night at work, she heard from Sue that Claudia had been fired.
Allison was changing clothes when she heard. She stopped in her tracks, "Fired? Why would they fire her?"
