Emma said, “There wasn’t an actual fire. When you texted me, something felt off. This Hudson has a history of preying on female artists, but he always manages to calm the storm by dangling opportunities in front of them. Some of the lesser-known actresses are even willing to throw themselves at him, trading their dignity for a shot at fame. It’s an open secret in the industry. I never thought Hudson would be bold enough to try something with you.”
As the elevator descended towards the underground parking lot, Emma glanced at Allison, taking in her still intact appearance, and breathed a sigh of relief. “You’re okay, and that’s what matters. When Miguel came to fetch you for Hudson, I had a hunch and set up a smoke bomb in the building. As soon as your message came through, I triggered it. That Hudson is afraid of death. The moment he thought there was a fire, he forgot everything else and ran for it. He didn’t even bother with his pants.”
Allison got into her car and rolled down the window, inhaling the fresh air, feeling her heartbeat slow down.
The entertainment world was a murky swamp, and securing a place in it required more than she had ever imagined. She had wanted nothing more than to act, to play the roles she loved, unfettered and free. But there were always those who would force her into a corner.
Penelope’s malice.
Grace’s desperate pleas.
Leah’s threats.
And Hudson’s harassment.
As the car drove through the city streets, Emma spoke up, “The smoke at Epic Entertainment should’ve cleared out by now. That gadget I bought can only hold up for a few minutes. I bet Hudson has figured it out by now.”
Meanwhile, Hudson, in his underwear, had made it to the 16th floor. Although there weren’t many employees around, a few who were working late screamed at the sight, mistaking him for a pervert. Miguel quickly stepped in front of Hudson, barking at the staff, “What are you screaming at? Get lost!”
Hudson’s face was livid with anger. He had not gotten Allison, and now his employees had seen him in his current state. He cursed, “That damn bitch played us!” Without another word, he strode toward the elevator and pressed the button for the 18th floor. Miguel hurriedly said, “Mr. Sears, the office... there was a fire alert.”
“The hell with it! We’ve been played by that bitch Allison. There was no fire! She’s making fools of us!”
Emerging from the elevator, Hudson stormed towards his office. Along the way, he spotted several smoke devices and kicked them aside. The few staff members who had been working overtime had scattered because of the fire scare, and some had even called the police. Hudson had just changed into his pants when the sound of approaching fire engines echoed from below.
He instructed Miguel, “You handle it.”
Ten minutes later, Miguel returned to find Hudson kicking a sofa in a rage. “Damn, she messed with me like that. I’ll show her!”
“Mr. Sears, don’t get worked up over nothing. Allison is still under our thumb as long as she’s with Epic Entertainment. No point getting angry over one woman. I’ve arranged for Brooklyn to come over. Help you cool down.”
Hudson inhaled deeply. The air was still tinged with the smell of smoke and a faint hint of cherry blossoms, which was a reminder of Allison. He seemed to be almost intoxicated as he sat down on the sofa. “That woman is a natural siren. Her skin is so delicate and smooth. It’s a shame she’s with Kenneth. To me, Kenneth is nothing but a jester, banking on someone’s favor, isn’t he?”
