The Billionaire’s Secret Quartet novel Chapter 2008

"Did you or did you not say 'yes' to Alaric's proposal at Spencer's wedding, in front of everyone?" Kimberly pressed.

Hertha lifted her gaze, a whirlwind of grievances swirling in her heart that she longed to share with her mother. Yet, meeting her mother's stern look, she wilted, pursed her lips, and with a brave face, nodded, "Yes."

"Well, what's there to debate? Isn't it just as Alaric said, that you two plan to be together?" Kimberly threw her hands up, making her point clear.

"But Mom, you don't understand what happened back there," Hertha attempted to convey her dilemma.

"No matter the situation, you chose to accept him. With so many eyes on you, going back on your word now, how do you think that makes you look?" Kimberly knew her daughter all too well, always coming up with one excuse or another to dodge the happiness that was seemingly within reach.

Three years ago, she had done the same with Spencer, a perfectly good man.

And now, her baby's father was eagerly waiting to be with her. If she sabotaged this, there really was no hope for her.

Alaric, catching the drift, realized Kimberly was on his side.

The turmoil inside him vanished in an instant, even giving way to a bit of joy.

Having his mother-in-law in his corner meant he was halfway to success.

"I only accepted to ensure Spencer's wedding went off without a hitch," Hertha finally let out her frustration.

Kimberly was at a loss for words. Wanting to scold her but holding back because of Alaric's presence, she didn't want to give him a reason to laugh at them.

Did she really think life's significant moments were child's play, accepting a proposal on a whim only to backtrack later?

And did Spencer really need her to make such a sacrifice for his wedding?
