Dorothy had a way of speaking that was much softer than Everett's usual brusqueness.
But even in her gentleness, there was an undeniable force that was all her own.
Craig found himself so overwhelmed by her questions that he couldn't even find his voice!
Dorothy sighed deeply, "You should go first. Abigail's about to have the baby, and whether you're getting a divorce or not, you're the child's father. You have every right to see your child."
"I'm not getting a divorce."
That was the one thing Craig could say with absolute certainty.
...
By the time Aurora was in labor, she was too exhausted to even cry out in pain. Her face, no bigger than the palm of a hand, was as pale as a sheet, completely drained of color.
Even the attending doctor couldn't bear to watch, gently suggesting, "Ms. Lopez, perhaps we should consider a C-section? It might spare you some pain."
"No... a natural birth is better for the baby."
That was Aurora's firm belief.
She wanted the best for this child.
This was Craig's baby.
She wanted to bring him into this world healthy and strong, and then... she'd use all her strength to raise him on her own.
"But given your condition..."
"I can endure. I can do this!"
Just as Aurora finished her declaration, a new wave of contractions began.
Her hand clenched tightly around the edge of the bed, the pale, thin back of her hand marked with visible veins.
But even in her agony, Aurora didn't cry out.
She knew her parents must be waiting outside, worried sick.
That was why she had refused to have anyone with her during the delivery.
The pain peaked within seconds, so intense that Aurora felt like her brain was suffocating, on the verge of passing out.
Suddenly, amidst the chaos, she thought she heard a familiar voice—
It was Craig.
"I'm Aurora's husband. I need to go in!"
