Kenneth was about to push it back, but Karen beat him to it. She snatched up the money and stuffed it into his arms.
"Alright, he is going to take it then!"
"Huh?"
Dorothy chuckled, got up with her phone in hand, "I'm going to the restroom, you guys carry on."
As she left, Kenneth looked at the wad of cash, helpless and frowning, "What does it mean if I take this money?"
"You don't understand Dorothy! She's always super cautious and likes to keep track of every penny. If you still want a future with her, you can't be so hasty." Talking about her best friend, Karen seemed helpless too.
After all those years, her most vivid impression of Dorothy was that she was incredibly insecure.
And yet, she loved to put on a brave face.
"She's in need of money right now, and her mom's surgery is costly. Does she really need to be this calculative?" Kenneth realized Dorothy wasn't the girl he imagined she was.
It seemed like she was always cutting ties, any kind of ties. As if she was afraid of getting too close and too intimate with anyone.
"Just take the money anyway. Is it enough?"
"More than enough. I didn’t spend much." Kenneth pulled out a few bills, "Give the rest back to her."
"Okay."
...
Inside the restroom, Dorothy splashed cold water on her face to wake herself up.
Maybe because she didn't sleep the previous night, she felt lightheaded, as if she could faint anytime.
Looking at her swollen and bruised face in the mirror, Dorothy clenched her fists, suddenly pulled out her phone, and dialed Everett's number!
She told herself she just wanted to talk about canceling the contract with Everett and nothing else!
But as soon as she dialed the number, Dorothy held her breath.
