Megan’s tears streamed down her cheeks as she implored her mother, “Mom, I can’t go back to the psychiatric hospital. I’m not crazy, but if you lock me up again, I’ll lose my mind. We’re the Alcott family, one of Elysium's elite families. How can you just stand by and watch Aurelia destroy me without lifting a finger?”
Callie let out a heavy sigh, the weight of the world in her breath, “Honey, you’re mixed up with the mob now. How could you get so tangled up with those criminals?”
“Without the letter from your father, confirming your mental instability, which they exploited, you’d already be behind bars.”
Megan pleaded, “I only worked with them because they promised to help me marry Leopold. I did it all for the Alcott family. If I become the lady of the Stirling family, it’ll shine on the Alcott Group too.”
John snorted dismissively, “You’re causing a scandal. What kind of life do you expect with Leopold if you’ve wed him through such dirty tricks? Can you outplay him? He’s making a fool of you. Who knows if that child is even his?”
“My baby is Leopold’s, I swear it. You have to believe me,” Megan implored.
John waved her off, “Leopold’s no fool. There are a hundred ways a man can avoid fathering a child if he wishes to.”
Desperate, Megan grabbed his hand, “Dad, where’s my baby? Did you find him?”
“Why bother finding a child whose father is unknown? Better to act as if you never had this baby,” John coldly advised.
“But it’s Leopold’s! Why won’t any of you believe me? Once we find the child and run a DNA test, we’ll know for sure,” Megan countered.
“Enough. Spend the holidays quietly at home. Don’t stir up any more trouble. Otherwise, it’s straight back to the mental health facility,” John warned.
Megan was determined not to return to that psychiatric hospital. She’d rather die.
She needed a plan to escape and get away from Elysium.
