Aurelia observed William's unusual behavior. It was unlike William to throw such a tantrum.
"William, darling, wouldn't it be nice for Mommy to give you and Kane a little sister?"
"But I already have a little sister. You like Nova too, right?" William furrowed his tiny brow with the earnestness only a child could muster.
Aurelia stroked his hair gently, "Nova is adorable, and I do love her, but she's Arnold and Lisa's girl, not mine and Leopold's."
William pouted, "Why do you and Uncle Leopold even need to have a daughter?"
"Because we only have one son, sweetie. Kane would really love to have a sister." Aurelia explained.
"Kane can just think of Nova as his sister," William insisted.
"Sweetheart, Nova lives with her own mom and dad, not with us. We only get to visit her sometimes. If you have your own little sister, she'll live with us, and you can play and eat together every day."
William's cheeks puffed out in frustration. "Did Uncle Leopold sneakily put the baby in your tummy? I don't like Uncle Leopold at all."
Aurelia's expression was sterned, "William, you can't say things like that. It upsets me. I always consider your feelings, and you need to consider mine too. Uncle Leopold lost Liam, so it's important for us to give him another child. It's as simple as that."
William's head dropped as a wave of sadness washed over him. He had once had a simple, happy family, but now it felt fractured and incomplete.
"I'm a child from a single-parent family, and kids like me are always troubled with childhood shadows. Who asked for me to be from a single-parent family?"
After his outburst, he turned and ran outside.
