At the iron gate of the grand Stirling Mansion, a fortress of wealth and power, Megan waited anxiously.
It took a while before the security guard, who had gone in to report her arrival, returned.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Megan, Mrs. Stirling has made it clear that she isn't receiving guests recently."
Megan's heart skipped a beat. "I'm not just any guest," she protested, "I'm Megan, her future daughter-in-law."
The security guard was unmoved. His loyalty was to Jessica only. "You'll have to leave."
Left with no other options, Megan dialed Melissa's number.
Before long, Melissa arrived in her car. "Hop in, Megan. I'll take you inside."
Melissa was wholeheartedly in favor of Megan marrying into the Stirling family and couldn’t wait to see Leopold abandon Aurelia, a woman she considered low class.
In her opinion, the cheap woman Aurelia should be kept under the heel of high society, never given a chance to rise.
What she didn't anticipate, however, was the security guard's refusal to open the gate.
"Mrs. Stirling has given strict instructions that Ms. Megan can’t set foot in the Stirling Mansion without her permission. If you insist on bringing her in, Ms. Melissa, you are also denied entry."
"Excuse me?"
Infuriated and at a loss, Melissa had no choice but to ask Megan to wait outside while she went in to negotiate with her mother and convince her to bend the rules.
In the mansion, Jessica was enjoying a cup of coffee and listening to music.
