Aurelia had no desire for coffee. Her doctor told her that a severe bacterial infection had resulted in her coma. She had to be careful with what she ate or drank until she fully recovered.
Yet, she found herself in a coffee shop anyway.
Evelyn ordered a latte, stirring it casually as she delivered her barbed words. “I’ve told you before that Leopold was in love with my sister Megan. The moment she returned, he couldn't wait to divorce you so they could get married. I almost feel sorry for you.”
Aurelia knew Evelyn was there to gloat, to kick her while she was down. But, she was eager to see Evelyn to have a heart-to-heart chat.
“Leopold loves your sister and wants to marry her. What's that got to do with you?”
Her words hit home, striking Evelyn's sore spot. Evelyn's relationship with her sister, Megan, had been tense. Megan had always overshadowed her, and as long as Megan was around, Evelyn knew she'd never get ahead.
“She's my sister. Of course, I'm happy for her if she's with Leopold.”
Aurelia shook her head, sighing deeply. “Oh, it’s touching to see how much you love Megan. It's a shame that Megan didn't take you as a dear sister when she stole Leopold away from you.”
Evelyn's face twitched. “What do you mean? Don’t beat about the bush!”
Aurelia leaned back in her chair, speaking calmly, “Leopold first noticed you, not Megan. He liked your innocence. He prefers simple-minded women. But Megan noticed that and started to badmouth you. She told him that you were faking your innocence and that you were manipulative and even a school bully, which had led Leopold to dislike you and start seeing Megan as the better person.”
