Evelyn suspected Leopold had grown tired of her, especially since he was keen to send her away after her sister returned.
As she mulled over this, Aurelia's voice echoed again. “Surely, you don’t think I’m the only woman in Leopold’s life, do you?”
Evelyn was slightly stunned. “He has other women? How did I not know?”
Aurelia chuckled. “They’re all hidden shadows. No man of the Stirling family is ever faithful in love. I don’t care much if you are with Leopold. If your sister takes my place, I don’t think she’ll allow you to be his mistress. She stole Leopold from your hands, and you are the first she'll guard against.” This last sentence instantly sent Evelyn’s resentment soaring.
In her eyes, Aurelia was no match for her. She didn’t give a shit on any woman like Aurelia, who had no money, power, or a strong background. Aurelia was no threat.
She had successfully elbowed Aurelia out once, and she was confident she could do it again.
As for Megan, it was a different case altogether. Evelyn had never won against her. Megan was the golden child of the family, and their parents were partial to Megan. Undoubtedly, they would go all out to support Megan this time. She was Evelyn’s biggest adversary.
“Aurelia, I do pity you,” Evelyn mused. “You’re weak and no match for Megan. She's a combination of cunning and innocence. You can't defeat her.”
Aurelia pulled out a bottle of water from her bag, took a sip, and retorted, "Pot, meet kettle. You're just as bad off against her unless you can dig up some scandal from her missing six years to use against her."
Evelyn's face clouded over. Aurelia’s words reminded her of Megan remaining silent about what happened during those six years. She was determined to uncover any skeletons in her sister's closet.
…
Upon returning to the Stirling Mansion, his son, Kane, immediately approached Leopold. "Daddy, is Mommy coming today?"
On hearing it, Leopold’s heart gave a painful lurch.
Would Aurelia even come back? From then on, he would have to sleep alone, lingering in the shadows of loneliness.
