The disappointment in Megan's heart rose and fell like ocean waves. She had planned to flaunt her relationship, to rub it in Aurelia's face, but Leopold wasn't playing along.
"I'm the wife of the CEO of Astral Enterprises, so I should be accompanying you to this event. It wouldn't be appropriate for your ex-wife to be accompanying you."
As she spoke, her eyes raked over Aurelia's face, as if wishing she could kill her with her gaze.
Aurelia did her best to remain calm, not wanting a single bitter pill to spoil her mood.
"Mr. Leopold, I'm going to excuse myself."
She turned to leave, not wanting to stay a second longer, lest she would be sad.
Regardless of whether Leopold's words were true or false, seeing him with Megan stirred up all her resentment, her hatred, and her pain, making it impossible for her to think clearly.
She reached the waiter, took a glass of champagne from his tray, drank it in one gulp, and then took another.
Seeing this, Emma rushed over and put her arm around her, "Easy on the drinks, and don't get drunk."
"I'm fine." She waved her hand dismissively.
"Megan is just trying to provoke you, so don't fall for her tricks," Emma warned.
"I know." She smirked. Those who did evil would eventually face their punishment. Justice may be slow, but it never failed to arrive.
Leopold watched her retreating figure, feeling a pang of guilt. This was supposed to be her happiest and most shining day, but now she was clearly upset.
Megan's voice came from beside him, "Leopold, I'm your wife. Since New Year's, you haven't even reached out to me. Do you know how lonely I've been? How much I've missed you? I want a husband, not just a marriage certificate."
"You shouldn't be too greedy, or you'll meet a bad end. Remember that," Leopold said coldly, and then walked away, leaving her standing there, utterly humiliated.
Afraid of losing face, she quickly found a secluded corner and sat down.
Whispers spread through the banquet hall as people watched the scene unfold.
