Melissa's face was an ashen shade of terror, her eyes darting unconsciously into the dark corners of the forest, a shiver running down her spine at the thought of some boogeyman lurking in the bushes, waiting to exact some sinister plan.
She couldn't fathom why Megan would entangle herself with such a criminal organization. She was crazy.
Aurelia, with a swift turn, headed back toward the campsite, and Melissa followed her like a shadow, terrified of being left alone in the dark.
Once back at the camp, Melissa dove into her tent, vowing not to step foot outside again, lest danger find her.
Leopold hung out with William and Skyler over a game of Monopoly, but as soon as Megan was nowhere to be seen, he slipped into Aurelia's tent.
He'd caught a glimpse of Melissa and her coming back together from the trail.
"Did Melissa play a hardball again?"
Aurelia whispered so softly it was almost a breath, "I spilled the beans about Megan and the AK Group. Melissa's scared stiff, holed up in her tent. You're not mad, right? I just didn't want her to get played like Ritchie did. Better she knows than be used by Megan unknowingly."
Leopold shrugged nonchalantly, "Better out than in, I guess. Saves her from being Megan's lapdog."
Aurelia propped herself on an elbow, a wry smile playing on her lips, "Here I thought you'd played some tricks to flip Megan to our side. Seems she's still playing for the criminal organization?"
He frowned slightly, aware that some people can't be saved from themselves.
He had given her a chance. If she didn't value it, she couldn't blame him for being ruthless.
"Try to avoid clashing with Megan." He needed to prevent her from making a desperate move. But Aurelia misread his caution as concern for Megan, feeling as if she'd been stabbed in the heart.
"No worries. As long as she doesn't provoke me, I'm steering clear," she declared, then with sudden force, shoved him, "Now scram before she sees you and throws a fit of jealousy my way."
Leopold heaved a sigh, swallowed whatever he was going to say, and crawled out.
Aurelia yanked the tent flap shut, not wanting another glimpse of him.
The jerk was caring so much for Megan, but why bother with her?
