At that moment, Leopold exited the hotel and stepped onto the sunlit plaza.
William came running over with the urgency of a stampede, throwing his arms around Leopold and bursting into tears.
Leopold quickly lifted him into his arms. "What's wrong, boy? Who's been picking on our little William?"
"Uncle Leopold," William sobbed, "that mean woman Megan cursed me, saying I'd never grow up and that I'd... I'd..." His words turned into fresh tears, soaking his little Batman mask.
Leopold's heart ached as he gently patted William's back, whispering words of comfort.
Then, he strode over to Megan with a lethal chill in his eyes and rebuked her fiercely. "If you're sick, get help, but don't take it out on a child. Only someone with an evil heart would spew such venom at a three-year-old."
Megan's face twisted as if stung by a wasp, her lips nearly splitting in her distress.
"I only wanted him to stop lying. The child's so full of it. You know what they say, 'The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.'"
"Are you saying people from the Stirling family are liars?" Leopold's gaze turned icy, the frost in his demeanor almost tangible, his presence chilling the air as sunlight seemed to freeze.
Megan shivered. "No, I meant Aurelia isn't disciplining him properly."
"It seems to me it's your upbringing that's lacking. You don't even understand the basic decency of respecting the elders or loving the young. The Alcott family's values are truly concerning," Leopold retorted.
Megan's face flushed a mottled shade of crimson, tinged with purple and a hint of jaundiced yellow.
Skyler, who had run over to join the fray, clenched his fists and stomped. "You are so mean. How could you pick on William, you big bully!"
Sniffling, William looked up at Leopold. "Uncle Leopold, I didn't lie. I said she had a baby girl in her tummy, and she got mad and cursed me."
