A shadow, deep and indescribable, flickered in Kane's eyes.
If that was the case, Rocky must have gotten sick the day before, not over the weekend.
"Hey, Skyler, wanna hang out at our place?"
"Sure," Skyler nodded.
William emerged from the bathroom, and they headed to the apartment.
Once inside, Kane shut the door and whispered, "I think Rocky picked up the superbug at school yesterday."
William blinked in surprise. "That can't be right. If there was superbug at school, why would he be the only one sick?"
"Could be a targeted thing," Kane mused. "Remember when he had my clam chowder yesterday?"
William gasped. "You think the clam chowder had poison? But wasn't it Ramona who brought it over? Are you saying she wanted to poison you?"
Skyler interjected, "Come on, what could a kid like her know about any superbug?"
Kane laid out his theory. "Haven't we been confused about why the kidnappers snatched her parents instead of taking her to extort them? They were likely after me, turning Ramona into a mole, waiting for the right moment to strike."
William found Kane's analysis chillingly plausible. Kane always had a knack for cutting through to the heart of a matter.
"Let's confront Ramona now."
"First, let's check the surveillance footage," suggested Kane.
They went to the girls' dorm first, asking the resident advisor. Indeed, Ramona had received a package from home the week before.
Kane suspected it contained the poison sent by the kidnappers.
Next, they visited the security office to review the cafeteria footage.
