The air in the office was tense, as if a knife were suspended right above the superintendent’s head.
Superintendent Donald attempted to break the tension with a forced chuckle. “Why don’t you two have some tea first?”
“There’s no need for that. I can’t afford to drink your tea here.” Bella crossed her graceful legs, her gaze icy. “You’ve imprisoned my secretary, and I would appreciate it if you could release him immediately. This issue is a private affair between the Thompsons and the Iversons. If you wish to maintain your smooth ascent and success in your career, I suggest you avoid meddling around to spare yourself some trouble.”
Bella was always direct and to the point—never one to beat around the bush.
Superintendent Donald’s smile began to falter. Yet he maintained his composure and responded, “Ms. Thompson, I sympathize with your situation. However, I’ve served in the police force for over thirty years and have interacted with various individuals. No one brought here has ever been entirely innocent. Even though Steven Lovett is a Thompson affiliate, his actions have seriously injured Charles Iverson, amounting to a grave intentional assault offense. I have already reported the forensic results to my superiors.”
Bella frowned, her hand gripping the sofa’s armrest in frustration.
“Both of you are well-known personalities in Savrow, but everyone is equal before the law. Not even tycoons can use their power to oppress the weak and disregard the law. Therefore, I regret to say that I cannot comply with your request.”
“Superintendent Donald, you’re so eloquent. Everyone is equal before the law.” Justin’s warm hand tightly grasped his partner’s hand, his commanding eyes exuding a chill. “That means you shouldn’t wrongly judge an innocent person, right?”
Bella’s eyes widened as realization struck her, causing her heart to skip a beat.
“What do you mean by that, Mr. Salvador?” Superintendent Donald asked in confusion.
“The person who assaulted Charles wasn’t Steven. It was me.”
Justin’s lips curled into a cold, disdainful arc, his dark eyes glinting with a sharp, chilling edge, as if he were about to slay the man. “You can release Steven now and arrest me instead.”
What?!
Bella gasped, clutching his hand tightly. “Justin! You…”
Superintendent Donald was shocked, his mouth agape, unable to respond.
“What’s the matter, Superintendent Donald? I’ve just confessed. Aren’t you going to arrest me?”
