Charlie was impressed at Janus's attention to the minute details. He praised, "I guess they must think they've done a great job. Still, they couldn't deceive you."
Janus waved his hand humbly. "You're praising me too much, Mr. Wade. I’m not that attentive, but I've been in Oskiatown for many years. I'm so familiar with this place that I can immediately notice if anything strange happens here.”
Janus then added with a smile, "It's no exaggeration to say that after staying in one place for a long time, I can even tell if the next door dog’s barks sound different from usual."
His tone changed into one of worry as he asked Charlie, "Mr. Wade, why are the police paying attention to you? Did the Ten Thousand Armies leave any clues for them to track down?"
Charlie shook his head. "The Ten Thousand Armies didn't. Actually, I might have overlooked a small detail. I sent a girl with a sensitive identity to escort Jordan and Kathleen Fox back to New York. At that time, I didn't think too much about it. I told her to bring them in, but I ignored one thing. The moment she enters the country, she will be a clue."
Charlie added, “Merlin has led his men to surround the Fox Group's headquarters. Fortunately, I received the news ahead of time and instructed the girl to leave quickly. If the New York police find her, things will get messy."
Janus asked in a hurry, "What are the details, Mr. Wade? Can you tell me?” Charlie had nothing to hide from Janus, so he explained why he had Rosalie escort Jordan and Kathleen to Syria, and why he changed his mind halfway and sent them to New York instead.
Janus nodded softly after he listened to the story. "Indeed, it wasn’t planned properly. However, it's understandable. In any case, you've handled the situation well. Missing one or two small details is normal."
He became slightly emotional as he went on, "Merlin has made an ill-thought decision this time. He made a big show by sealing the Fox Group. If he can't find anyone, his good days will come to an end."
"That's true" Charlie nodded. "I didn't expect him to be such a rash person.”
“Well, I can understand,” Janus said. "He's had a smooth sailing career. He solved almost all his cases and as well as other detectives' seemingly unsolvable cases. He succeeded in handling every case he’s ever had, and amassed a great reputation. Now that he's about to retire, the sudden surge of horrific incidents in New York may affect the reputation and image he's worked so hard to build. He's badly affected by this."
Janus added, "It's just like a genius Math professor who’s never been stumped by an equation. He thought he could leave with full glory, but suddenly, he encounters many unsolvable equations right before his retirement. Everyone is watching him and expects him to solve them. It'd be difficult for him to calm down."
"Indeed." Charlie nodded in agreement. " This incident isn't fair to him.”
Janus smiled. "Well, such is life. No one can have a smooth sailing life forever. There will always be some setbacks in life. It's just a matter of time.”
After that, he asked Charlie again, "But if the Ten Thousand Armies didn't reveal any clues about you, why would the police come here?"
Charlie gave it a thought. After some time, he suggested, "Perhaps they received a clue from my uncle...”
