Lowell only understood half of what was going on after they spoke on the phone, so he asked Heinz, "Did Janice ask these reporters to come here?"
"If not her, who would it be?" Gary asked in an agitated tone.
Sure enough, Lowell's expression changed drastically.
He looked at Gary apologetically and said, "I'll take responsibility for whatever happens later during the press conference."
Gary glanced at him and said, "What else can she say except that she's my girlfriend in front of the press? Being my girlfriend elevates her status immediately. If you tell everyone that Janice is your girlfriend, then it would be even worse as everyone would think that we're fighting over a gid."
That possibility existed, of course.
The media would just blow it out of proportion.
"Celeste is your girlfriend," Lowell replied.
"Lowell, you probably don't know this, but Celeste has left our house," Heinz said.
"Huh?" Lowell was shocked, and he gave his brother a quizzical look. "Why did Celeste leave? Does she know about...?"
As he spoke, his gaze turned towards Gary, hoping to receive a solid answer.
Gary smiled wryly and said, "Celeste knew about it a long time ago. She wanted to pretend like nothing was wrong between us, but I felt unhappy at this farce we were keeping up. I said a few unkind things, and Celeste left the very next day."
The guilt in Lowell's eyes intensified.
It was all his fault.
If he hadn't introduced Janice to Gary, this wouldn't have happened.
At the end of the day, he was the culprit.
He lowered his head in frustration. "I'm really sorry."
"Can you stop apologizing?" Gary reprimanded in a low voice.
Heinz had no choice but to cut in. "Gary, Celeste's departure had nothing to do with Lowell. She left because you guys didn't trust one another enough."
Gary frowned but did not refute his father.
It was wrong for him to be angry at Lowell, but he was too anxious to be rational.
Lowell shook his head. "No, I'm to blame for this. Gary wouldn't have taken extra care of Janice if it wasn't for me, so it's all my fault."
"The way Janice goes to extremes for love is not normal, so it's no one! s fault. After all, no one wanted it to turn out this way." Heinz comforted Lowell. "There's no need to be so guilty either. The main thing now is how do we stop Janice's plan?"
"We'll do as you said." Lowell raised his head and glanced at both Heinz and Gary. "I'll come forward and say that Janice is my girlfriend. That'll help Gary clear his misunderstanding with Celeste."
"It won't work." Gary shook his head solemnly. "I thought of this before, and it seemed like a good idea at first. However, I don't think it's a good plan anymore. Nothing we say will work."
"You have to think this through, Gary. If Lowell doesn't do this, the media might say that Janice is your girlfriend and that you've abandoned her." Heinz reminded Gary carefully.
"There's still no need for Lowell to say that Janice is his girlfriend. The truth won't work, nor will a lie."
"Do you have any evidence to clear your name?" Heinz felt that it was all a little strange. Gary had agreed to his plan earlier but changed his mind in such a short time. Thus, suspicion arose in his mind.
Gary shook his head. "I don't have proof. I just need to prove that I've never slept with Janice."
"Then what do you need me to do?" Lowell was very concerned. "Do you know where Celeste is, Gary? We should find her and tell everyone that Celeste is your girlfriend. Grace and Celeste have been slandered enough."
"If Janice says that she's my girlfriend now, the media won't believe it."
Heinz's brow furrowed. "I'm just afraid that she won't say that she's your girlfriend. Instead, she'll say that she's pregnant with your child."
Gary nodded. "I feel like that way too. I feel like she wants to push me to the brink and make me into the bad guy. Most importantly, she wants Celeste and I to be completely estranged."
