The stomach was twisted with cancer cells. Brett stared silently at the screen, feeling like the world went silent for a moment.
"That's Izabella's stomach?"
"Mr. Windham, if you still don't believe this, and still think the medical records are fake and the images are fabricated, then just ask yourself: Have you ever seen Ms. Salotti in so much stomach pain that she couldn't sleep all night?"
"Ever seen her throwing up blood?!"
"Ever seen her pass out from stomach pain and get sent to the hospital?!"
"Regular stomach problems don't cause bloody vomiting!"
Each question from the nurse was like a bomb thrown into Brett's head, exploding into chaos. The situation was spiraling out of control, and he couldn't find the words to argue. His stupefied expression suddenly turned into panic.
No matter how much he wanted to doubt it, he knew that things were nothing like he had thought. Izabella really had stomach cancer.
She had never lied to him from the beginning.
Brett suddenly remembered what Izabella had said that night, leaning against him.
—"Brett, I'm dying."
—"I have stomach cancer and probably won't live another year."
—"What if I told you I never lied to you from the start? Brett, you're really smart, never believing in me from beginning to end. You can just think that way for the rest of your life."
—"Could you please go back to Quiet Forest Estates and get my medicine? It's the thing that could save my life."
