"Abusing a cat ain't illegal, right? It's just a cat, after all?"
Those words were like pouring gasoline on a fire for some people. If someone could cruelly hurt a cat, there's no way they would feel remorse.
Someone picked up an unopened can and smashed it on Ariana's head. The weight and sharp edges of the can split her forehead like a knife.
Ariana cried out in pain, her vision blurring as her brain rattled, and she stumbled and fell to the ground.
The person at the front didn't stop there. They started to lay into Ariana with kicks and punches.
"Do you think it's okay to hurt something just because it ain't protected by law, Ariana? You don't deserve to be human!"
Most people had enough decency not actually to hurt her, and they just spat at her bloody face.
"Pah!"
The pain was unbearable. She felt like she was dying.
"Do you know what pain feels like now? Did you think about how much pain that cat was in when you hurt it yesterday? It was crying out, begging you, but did you stop? You poured gasoline on it, burned it, cut it, pulled its teeth out with pliers. Did you ever think about how much pain that was? Ariana, you're a monster. You don't deserve to be human. People like you should go to hell, become a dead rat!"
Ariana was holding her head, enduring the pain. She didn't want to know, not at all. Why was all the blame on her? Wasn't Kristin Lasley at fault too? The assistant too?
She wanted to say the one who was wrong from the start was Izabella! If Izabella had left her a way out at the beginning, none of this would have happened.
She hated these people so much.
The neighbourhood security guard noticed the commotion and came running.
"Someone's coming. Let's scram!" The crowd immediately dispersed, running off in different directions.
"Ma'am, are you okay? Do you need me to call the police?" They spoke words of concern, but no one reached out to help her because Ariana was filthy and stank.
Ariana pushed herself off the ground, slowly getting up despite the pain. She was panting, tears falling down and mixing with the blood on her face, making the pain even more intense. Her mask was twisted, revealing her bruised and swollen face.
The security guard recognized her instantly, his face going from concern to disdain.
The news about her was still hot. Her pictures of abusing cats were everywhere, even on the morning and evening news.
Who didn't know Ariana now, didn't know she abused cats?
