Richard thought it over and said, "I think the people from the nearby village put these here to prevent people from coming and going easily."

Since it was dark, they didn’t dare drive fast. They moved slowly, worried they might run into something dangerous.

But inside, Pearl was getting more and more anxious. "I think they've taken Esther to the village. Something bad might happen if we take too long to get there."

Richard looked serious. "If that's the case, Esther might already..."

"I believe in her," Pearl said, taking a deep breath to calm herself. "She'll try to protect herself."
