The room fell into a deathly silence.
Zoe slumped to the floor, feeling utterly defeated and ready to meet her end. Yuna, with her hair a wild mess, looked every bit the madwoman, her expression one of deranged fury. Suddenly, she snapped out of it and yelled at Zoe, "Well, aren't you going to chase her? Do you want her spilling the beans to everyone?"
Zoe had lost all fight, her voice weak and spiritless. "What's the point? You were the one who wanted to spill the beans! We could have smoothed things over..."
"I've had it with Marguerite for ages! She's always acting so high and mighty. Marguerite is a piece of work, and so is her mother! If you won't chase her, I will!" Yuna's voice broke in frustration as she grabbed her car keys and hobbled out at top speed.
Zoe felt like her world was crumbling. What was Yuna thinking? Yuna had ignored Zoe's plea not to reveal anything, fanning the flames of conflict with Penelope. And now, she was rushing out after her. Why wait until now? Zoe had no energy left for Yuna's madness.
But then it hit her: Yuna was no match for Penelope in wits. Zoe feared Yuna, in desperation, might do something drastic to silence Penelope. After all, Penelope was a Fitzgerald, and no matter how much Hackett doted on Yuna, he wouldn't cover for her if she committed murder. If Yuna did something rash, they would all be ruined.
With this thought, Zoe forced herself up and dashed out after Yuna.
Meanwhile.
Penelope raced to the parking lot, slammed the gas pedal, and zoomed off. The factory fire from the night before was in the outskirts, and due to Yuna's urgent need for burn treatment, they had to rush her to the nearest hospital. Heading back to the city would take a long time. Moreover, with the roads being mountainous and having been battered by the storm the night before, Penelope dared not speed up, despite her urgency.
She couldn't wait, desperate to reveal the truth to Marguerite. So, she drove with one hand on the wheel and the other putting on a Bluetooth headset, dialing Marguerite’s number. After several attempts with no answer, Penelope kept calling.
Just then, she noticed a blue sedan suddenly appear behind her in the rearview mirror, following closely. She saw Yuna, in her hospital gown, gripping the steering wheel with a fierce and crazed look in her eyes. Feeling threatened, Penelope ignored the risks and accelerated.
Damn it!
Pick up the phone!
Marguerite, answer your phone!
As Penelope continued to dial and drive, she finally managed to shake off Yuna's pursuit at a bend. And at that moment, Marguerite's phone finally connected.
"Marguerite! Why are you only picking up now? This is urgent! Extremely important!" Penelope blurted out, panic-stricken.
Marguerite, puzzled by the crackling static on the line, responded after a brief pause, "Penelope, it might be a bad signal. I didn’t hear your calls earlier. This is the first one that got through. What’s the matter?"
Penelope had intended to tell Marguerite the truth in person, but catching sight of Yuna catching up again in the rearview mirror, she realized there was no time for explanations.
"Marguerite! You are my daughter! Hayes is your long-lost son! Did you hear me? Hayes is your son!"
