Silence, prolonged silence.
Penelope thought Marguerite was just shell-shocked and couldn't snap out of it, so she quickly added, "Marguerite, I don't have time to explain everything! You need to head to the office right now..."
Before Penelope could finish, a resigned voice came from the other end: "Penelope, what did you just say? I didn't catch that!"
Penelope: "!!!"
So she had been talking to herself this whole time?
The thought made her anxious, and she raised her voice, "You are my daughter! Hayes is your son! Marguerite, did you hear me?"
Penelope's throat was dry from shouting, but the signal was so unreliable in the remote hills.
Her words turned into mere static noise by the time they reached Marguerite. She didn't catch a word!
"Penelope! I can't hear you! How about I hang up and call you back?"
"Go to the office! Wait for me at the office!"
"What? Penelope, it's breaking up, I can't hear you!"
Penelope shouted, "I said! Go to the office and wait for me! To the office! Wait for me!"
She had never been this frantic before, and at last, Marguerite finally caught Penelope's last sentence.
Wait for her at the office?
But what could be so urgent to make Penelope this panicked?
Without overthinking, Marguerite hurriedly ended the call and dashed towards Poppy Petal Fragrances.
Meanwhile, elsewhere...
