Bride Behind the Mask novel Chapter 660

"I didn't say much. She just asked me to wait for her at the office."

"That's it?"

Marguerite nodded. "Yes."

The officer looked surprised and picked up his phone to check the call logs. "You talked at 10:30 AM for just one minute, so you're telling me that was the entire conversation?"

Before Marguerite had been put into the police car, they had confiscated everything from her bag, including her phone.

"The signal was bad, her voice kept cutting out. I barely caught anything she said. The only clear thing was her asking me to wait at the office."

"Did you hear anything unusual before you hung up? Any sounds in the background?"

"She might have sounded a bit agitated, probably because I kept asking her to repeat herself. Other than that, nothing."

"No sounds of a car crash?"

Marguerite thought for a second, then shook her head. "No."

"Where were you before 10:30 AM?"

"At home. After we hung up, I headed straight for the office."

"Anyone who can vouch for your whereabouts?"

Marguerite hesitated. "My family could, I guess. As for getting to the office, I barely reached the front door when my best friend called me, telling me Penelope had an accident. She was the first person I talked to. You could ask her. Also, the office entrance has CCTV. You might want to check that."

The officer took notes, then pressed a button on his desk. Another officer came in, and they whispered briefly before addressing Marguerite.

"We've sent someone to get the surveillance footage from your office and to talk to your witness. For now, you can't leave."

Marguerite nodded, watching everyone leave the interrogation room, feeling utterly miserable as she slumped on the cold bench.

The officer's detailed questioning, all business-like and stern, made Marguerite feel like a criminal, even though there was no evidence pointing to her.
