Bride Behind the Mask novel Chapter 661

Margaret's eyes, shimmering like stained glass, were filled with hope as she looked eagerly at the two individuals before her. She waited, nervous and uncertain, for their response.

The two exchanged a glance, unsure of what to say.

Finally, it was Caldwell, the one who had been questioning Margaret, who stepped forward, his tone filled with a great sense of consolation:

"Margaret, you're not part of Penelope's immediate family. You should try to keep a level head about this. So, let me be frank with you. The winding roads in the outskirts are notorious for accidents, and once a car goes over the cliff, there's been no survivors, not a single exception. Moreover, the rivers in winter are frozen solid. Penelope's car plunging down is no different than a freefall from a building, so the chances of survival are slim. What you need to do now is cooperate with the police in recovering the body and, if necessary, be there for the family to prevent any irrational actions."

The word "body" struck Margaret like a sharp knife, mercilessly piercing her heart.

Still not willing to give up, she asked, "But why would the cell phone survive the fall?"

"The human body and a cell phone are not comparable. Maybe the phone was on her person and somehow cushioned the impact. There are plenty of explanations, don’t obsess over it."

With Caldwell's words, Margaret finally lost all hope.

So, Penelope was truly gone? Never to return...

"All set with the paperwork? You're free to go," a female officer said, glancing over the statement Margaret had signed and motioning her to leave.

Margaret sighed, turning towards the door.

But before she could leave, the officer's vigilant voice suddenly called out, "Wait!"

Margaret turned around, puzzled, "Is there something else?"

Caldwell was just as confused, both looking at the officer who was intently reviewing Margaret's statement, lost in thought.
