The trio quickly arrived at the hospital. Yuna was whisked away by a doctor for examination, while Frederick went to get the vitamin bottle tested. Marguerite found herself waiting helplessly on a bench outside the consultation room, her mind a blur from the recent commotion, feeling absolutely drained.
Deciding to clear her head, she got up in search of a bathroom to splash some water on her face. However, navigating the hospital felt like wandering through a labyrinth. She ended up opening a large metal door, only to find herself in an emergency exit corridor.
Just as Marguerite was about to turn back, she suddenly heard a man's voice from below. It sounded eerily like Maurice! Tiptoeing to the stair corner and peering down cautiously, she saw that the dimly lit passage barely allowed any sunlight in, leaving only a faint glow that highlighted her face.
After a moment, she could indeed confirm it was Maurice. But what was he doing here alone, talking to someone?
"You better keep it low-key for a while, don't just show up at my office whenever you feel like it," Maurice spoke in a chilling tone that sent shivers down her spine. He then moved forward, and a woman emerged from the shadows.
Despite the poor lighting making it hard to see clearly, Marguerite could still make out the woman's alluring silhouette, her long, wavy hair cascading down to her waist, standing tall like a runway model from a high-end fashion show.
"Oh? And how exactly did you manage to say that, boss? You're the one who brought me here today," the woman retorted, taking out a slim cigarette from her purse. With a flick of her lighter, the flame briefly illuminated her crimson lips and the bold blue eyeshadow on her lids. Marguerite watched as the woman took a drag and then boldly blew the smoke directly into Maurice's face.
Marguerite was stunned. What was this bold move? Maurice, with his hands in his pockets, faced the woman. Marguerite couldn't see his expression, but the woman was clearly amused, bending over with laughter.
"Maurice, do you know what you look like right now? Like a lovesick puppy who's never been in a relationship, being toyed with by me."
Marguerite held her breath in the darkness, her eyes widening. She never imagined Maurice could be teased by a woman in such a flirtatious manner. But with the flirting so obvious, she knew she had to leave before things got more awkward.
As Marguerite slowly turned to leave, the woman's voice continued:
"Alright, enough teasing. Let's talk business. I've managed to contact the hacker from Veracoria, but he said if you want the wafer technology, you'll have to meet him personally."
Marguerite froze. A hacker from Veracoria? Wafer technology? Was Maurice also after this project? She quickly silenced her phone and hid in the shadows again, eager to overhear more.
"Do yourself a favor and back off. This hospital is an institution with a century-old legacy, highly respected and specialized. Do you think the director would risk introducing the wafer technology here? Maurice, implanting wafers into human bodies is illegal!"
"After all these years, you should know my style," said the woman, her laughter tinged with scorn. "Yes, I gave up everything to be with you, but it seems I still can't compare to that uneducated country bumpkin."
