Cured?
Cancer...cured?
How is that even possible?
The room fell into a stunned silence as soon as the words were out.
Susie's face turned a sickly shade of pale, then flushed with disbelief and shock. It took her a moment to find her voice again, and when she did, it was to snap at her assistant, "Alison, don't joke about something like this!"
Cancer being cured? That was unheard of. Impossible.
So, Alison had to be messing with them.
With that, the tension in the office broke slightly, laughter bubbling up as one colleague teased, "Seriously, Alison! You can't just joke about stuff like this. Imagine if a patient's family heard you and got their hopes up for nothing!"
But Alison's expression was all business, "Why would I joke about this? Get ready, everyone. We have a meeting in 10 minutes. I need to go inform the other departments!" And with that, she was off, hurrying away as if the very winds were at her heels.
The office descended back into a quiet murmur.
"Su...Dr. Susie, I think she's serious. Alison wasn't joking," Dr. Carmela, seated beside Susie, turned to her with wide eyes.
Susie was floored, disbelief and confusion swirling in her gaze.
How? How could this be happening?
That girl, how could she possibly cure cancer?
Why her?
A swell of uncomfortable feelings roiled in Susie's stomach, a mixture of envy and disbelief.
The office was abuzz with whispers and sighs.
Everyone had been keen to see Anthea and Abbey's downfall, eagerly anticipating Abbey's farewell party.
And now, this.
Cured.
"Man, life really isn't fair, is it? If only we knew Ms. Yeager had this up her sleeve, I would've jumped at the chance to join Team A!"
"Lucky Abbey, leaping straight to the top!"
"Now we're practically in different worlds. Bet we'll need to file a report just to see Abbey!"
"Exactly! Life's twists and turns, huh? Remember when we laughed at Abbey for wanting to lead Team A? Now who's laughing?"
