I got up and leaned into his arms tiredly and said, "I had a dream. There was you in the dream, and there was someone else in it..."
Benjamin asked coldly, "Someone else?"
"Well, a person I don't think I know. It was as if the memories I lost flashed by in front of me.
Benjamin asked, "Do you only remember me about what happened that year? And what happened between the Heaney sisters?"
I shook my head. "I've remembered a lot, but none of them matter."
I thought for a moment and said, "I don't have any important clues. I'm still not sure what I have forgotten."
Benjamin nodded. He stroked my cheek with his palm and said softly, "It's good to forget. It was not a pleasant thing."
What did he mean? Was there something he hadn't told me yet?
That day, Ben went back to City B with me and left in a hurry. It seemed something tricky happened.
However, I knew it was because of the Dunn family.
As soon as I arrived in City B, Bob called me and said, "There is a task for us. Wait for me to pick you up."
I didn't get any notice from the crime squad so the task must be about some other departments.
Bob wanted to bring me with him for company.
When Bob came to pick me up, I smiled and asked, "Where is September? Isn't she your favorite girl?"
"September is already five months along, and her belly is big as a soccer ball. She's not gonna be able to come along with us anymore."
I knew that being five months pregnant would not affect September if she really wanted to come along.
Bob should have noticed that there was something wrong with September's body.
Bob had been with us for too long to neglect those small symptoms September had already shown.
After arriving at the square, I saw several familiar colleagues, all of whom were from other departments. They were waiting for the suspect to show up.
Bob pulled me to sit on the bench in the square. I asked curiously, "Who is the suspect? Why are we here?"
"Why can't we be here?" Bob explained and said, "Nothing serious. He's just a dog thief."
I was surprised. "All these people are here for a man who stole a dog?"
Bob placed his hands in his pockets and gave me a sidelong glance. "The dog he stole was worth 200 grand. That's why all the people are here."
Two hundred thousand... dollars? What kind of dog could be worth that much?
I suddenly wanted to see this dog. Bob took out a photo from his pocket and handed it to me and said, "This is the dog that was stolen. A dog this big is not even allowed to be kept in the city."
"It doesn't look that fierce at all."
Bob replied, "It tears whatever it catches to pieces smaller than a finger."
I said, "Do you really think the thief would come to an open space like this?"
"The thief has just been chased here and has been hiding in a mall." Bob looked up at the dazzling sunshine and said dully, "We couldn't find him so we decided to surround the whole place. I just wanted to bring you along to see that dog!"
We waited for another hour. I was getting a little hungry when I saw a guy that worked at the mall coming out of the mall, pushing a cart with a cardboard box on it. I asked Bob, "The dog could be in the box."
Bob shook his head. "It couldn't be. If we go up there, we'll only alert the thief."
"How do you know?" I asked in surprise.
"Stupid. Does that dude look like he's running from cops?"
Bob paused for a moment and then said, "When did you become so dumb? Is that kid in your belly eating your brain?"
I wanted to ignore him but couldn't hold down my anger so I kicked Bob in the calf. He grunted in pain.
"What did I do to deserve that? Be a gentle lady, will ya?" Bob said as he grimaced.
As soon as he finished speaking, I said seriously, "Bob, at eleven o'clock, there is a man in a baseball suit with a black box in his hand. He looks very flustered and keeps looking around."
Bob looked over and said in surprise, "The box is pretty small. Are you guessing that he had anesthetized that dog?"
I said, "Maybe."
After observing for a moment, Bob sent a message to the other teams. The officers took him down and found the dog in the box with a golden nametag around its neck.
The officers squatted down and teased, "Hah, it's made of pure gold. It's worth quite a lot."
I glanced at the tag and saw the name on it was "Shears".
It made me feel kind of weird to see my own name on the nametag of a dog. I took a closer look at the dog that was worth 200 grand. There was actually nothing special about it.
