Benjamin invited me for dinner?
I was stunned. "When did it happen?"
"When I sent Ellis over."
"Why didn't you say that earlier?" I asked with a frown.
Diego said, "Because you seemed a little gloomy just now."
I was indeed in a bad mood just now, most of the reason is that I don't know how to face Benjamin after he became aware of Emy's existence.
And what if the bankruptcy really had nothing to do with the Dunn family? If it really had nothing to do with the Dunn family, what was I blaming him for?
If it were for he didn't save me when I fell into the sea the second time, he had also made his explanations on the night he found out about Emy.
As soon as I thought of these problems, I felt very upset.
"What did you tell him?" I asked.
"I said I had to ask you."
"Tell him now, then."
"I'll inform Mr. Dunn's assistant."
I stopped him and said, "Wait... I'll go."
There were things that just could not be avoided.
Furthermore, he had formally invited me through Diego, which was equivalent to the Dunn family's invitation to the Shears family. There was no reason for me to reject him.
It was almost dusk after we had two meetings in the company. I was very annoyed when I thought that I would meet Benjamin soon. I didn't know how to face him. After all, I felt guilty about him.
That was because Diego had just told me, "The bankruptcy was done by the Heaney family and the Solange family together with Marcel. During those two days, Mr. Dunn wasn't in City B. He only returned to City B on the night of the bankruptcy. He had no part in it."
I asked Diego, "Where is Benjamin?"
Diego reported, "Mr. Dunn was in City N in Country U. It would take at least one day to rush back to City B from there, and that's why they chose that time to do it. So even if Mr. Dunn knew about it, he would have no way to prevent it from happening. Not to mention he had no total control of the Dunn family back then either."
The bankruptcy of my company was too quick, it happened overnight. It felt like it was a long plotted scheme, waiting to strike me dead in one blow.
Moreover, they pushed the responsibility toward Benjamin.
Did they want me to hate Benjamin?
If that was their goal, they did it. But they never knew who I really was, at least not when they bankrupted my company.
I was Emma Shears, the president of the Shears Group.
The night in City B was very brilliant, with colorful lights brightening the whole city. I looked out of the window and felt like I was in a dream. Diego reminded, "Mr. Dunn has been waiting for almost an hour."
"What?" I asked in surprise.
I looked at the window of the restaurant. Benjamin sat there and looked at the opposite side of him, waiting for me to be there. From my direction, I could only see the side face of Benjamin. He was still as handsome as before, but not as sharp.
"Benjamin was almost 34 years old, right? That was the age when a boy truly turned into a man. His emotions would no longer be violent and bright as a ball of fire but more like a beacon of hope amidst the choppier ocean." I thought to myself.
Diego reminded me gently, "Ms. Shear."
I came back to my senses and said, "Let's go.
Hearing this, Diego got off the car and opened the door. I got off the car and sorted out my dress for a while, then I followed Diego into the dining room.
I had to admit that I was a little timid.
As soon as I entered the restaurant, I met the eyes of Benjamin. I bypassed Diego and sat opposite him. I asked softly, "Why the dinner?"
Benjamin glanced at Diego, and Diego sensibly left.
After Diego left, Benjamin asked calmly, "How do you feel, seeing me again?"
"What do you mean?" I asked, my hand balled into fists.
He said firmly, "You left for a year and a half."
"Well, what do you want to say, Benjamin?" I asked.
Benjamin said in a low, hoarse voice, "When you left, you said you would see me in a year's time, but you left for a year and a half."
I was stunned. I really didn't expect him to hold onto my words.
I said softly, "There were some changes in the arrangements."
"Some changes?" Benjamin raised his eyebrows in disdain and asked sarcastically, "Were you afraid that I will steal Emy from you if you return home?"
What he said was right, I had to admit.
"My family are all in Ireland. What's the point of coming back here? I'm only here because I needed to take care of something."
"Your family are all in Ireland?" Benjamin asked, biting his lips. Suddenly, he asked, "Are you not going to let me see my child?"
I said simply, "Emy's not coming back here."
