It was true that Zack never mentioned other people's matters, even if I took the initiative to ask about Teresa before, he chose to remain silent.
He said that he had promised others.
He was impatient with Teresa, but he still fulfilled his promise.
I didn't see Zack when I woke up in the morning. I looked at the folded quilt beside me, lost in thought. He silently guarded me, but never asked for anything.
I got up and changed into a light- colored dress. When I opened the door, I saw Zack in the living room.
When he heard the sound, he stood up and went to the kitchen and said, "I made breakfast for you, all of which are what you like to eat."
What I liked to eat... Indeed, they were all my favorite things. I sat at the dining table and cut the fried egg with a knife and fork. I heard Zack suddenly ask, "Did you marry Steve on your own accord?"
My hand stopped moving. Then I remembered all the sorrows and worries I had endured in the past. I nodded and answered, "Yes, I did. I didn't think too much back then. It was about time to get married and so I did." Zack said, "Four years ago, I went to see you. At that time, you were with Steve, so I didn't bother you."
I smiled and said, "Steve was introduced to me by Janse Solange. Speaking of this embarrassing and failed marriage, it was because of the Solange family."
"Well, you can take revenge if you want." Zack handed me a glass of milk and said lightly, "Do what you like. Don't have any scruples."
"Zack..." I looked at him and said, "Thank you." "Em, we have more important things to do than revenge on them." Zack was silent for a while and then explained, "The case was interrupted back then, and you are a key figure in that case."
"You said smuggling?" I was amazed.
"Well, the smuggling case of '11 has been exposed. At that time, the Solange and the Heaney families were involved. But after you disappeared, the most evidence also did," Zack said.
I asked, "I have no impression. But what was it?"
Zack explained, "A flash drive, you recorded a list in the flash drive, but no one ever managed to find it."
"That is to say, I'm the only one who knows where it is?"
I felt that I was involved in a complicated case, but I didn't have any clue about what was going on. I asked Zack nervously, "What if we can find it?"
"If we can find it, we would be able to press new charges on the case back then and we would figure out about everything that's happened to you."
I asked hopefully, "Heaney family and Solange family will be destroyed?"
"I wouldn't say destroyed. After all, after five years, the Solange and Heaney families have already found a way to deal with it. At that time, I'm afraid there will be other families being scapegoats!"
Zack explained, "Although it won't cause a fatal blow to the Solange and Heaney families, we, as the officers that handled this case, have the responsibility to tie up these loose ends."
I nodded and said, "Bently's hypnosis is very effective. I'll go and see if we and work out something else."
I wanted to remember about Zack.
Later, I learned that the reason I couldn't remember was probably really as what he said, the more important the memory was, the harder it was to retrieve. My memory with Zack was really precious.
The memories were sorrowful and almost unbearable, but not for me, for him.
After breakfast, I drove Zack's car to the airport. He wanted to go back to the police station before 11 o'clock.
When we got to the airport, Zack said, "The meeting is over at two o'clock in the afternoon. I will hand over some things. Then I will take the plane back to City B at four o'clock in the afternoon and I will come back home at seven o'clock in the evening."
Before I could say anything, I heard a harsh voice. "Zack, when did you come back to City B?"
I tilted my head slightly, and Teresa stared fixedly at Zack. There was so much affection in her eyes that it testified what Zack said the night before. Even when Benjamin was by her side, she still had no intention to hide it at all.
I couldn't understand how Benjamin could put up with that.
Not only was Benjamin there, Victoria was there as well. Victoria's expression was calm and there was nothing unusual about it.
Even though the Benjamin she loved was her brother-in-law, I didn't see any expressions on her face when she was standing right beside them.
Zack frowned and ignored her.
Teresa, however, was not embarrassed at all. She smiled gratefully and said, "I'm going back to the States. What are the odds of us running into each other, huh?"
Zack withdrew his eyes, slightly lowered his head, and said to me softly, "Em, take care of yourself."
After Zack left, I turned back to look at Teresa. She didn't do anything in front of Zack. I suddenly realized that she would not be pretentious in front of anyone except Zack. She knew his bottom lines.
I ignored Benjamin and was about to leave. Teresa, however, spoke up to stop me. "What? Are you and Zack a thing now?"
I shook my head and said in a cold tone, "He does love me and I know if we were a thing, that would probably drive you mad, well, madder than you already are! But I haven't stooped that low yet."
Teresa heaved a sigh of relief. With a grin, she said, "No one is worthy of him, including you!"
"Is that so? Since you can talk about another man like that in front of your own husband, I'm beginning to have some doubts about your so-called love."
Benjamin's expression was indifferent. Zack told me that Ben knew whom Teresa liked, but he did not care about it.
