Agnes heard the noise at the door and looked up, startled. Seeing Jared standing there only intensified her surprise.
Jared rushed over, his voice a mix of worry and urgency, "What are you doing?"
Agnes replied quickly, "No time to explain now, we'll talk later."
Jared grabbed her hand, "Come on, we need to get out of here. Someone's coming."
He had just dealt with a couple of thugs and found the room. He knew they'd be pursued soon.
Agnes had just managed to secure the number for the notorious Honey Badger, a task far from simple. The number was well-hidden in a secret spot on the phone. However, Agnes had learned some tricks from Nate and was familiar with the underworld's common deceptions. With a bit of luck and skill, she found the elusive number.
Agnes had initially planned to leave as soon as she had the information. She had already knocked Lanny out cold and informed Jarvis. Jarvis decided to move up the operation, planning to bust the entire drug ring that night. All Agnes needed was the number to spring into action. Delaying was risky; Lanny could destroy the phone or warn their superiors. Now, with the number in hand, Agnes was ready to leave.
In a protective gesture, Jared draped his jacket over Agnes's shoulders as they made their way out. But they were met with a gang of thugs, armed and ready in the hallway. Agnes and Jared exchanged a determined look.
"Can you hold them off for three minutes?" Agnes asked confidently.
In three minutes, the SWAT team would arrive. If they could hold out until then, they would be safe. Agnes wasn’t too worried; her taekwondo training was more than enough to deal with a few thugs.
Jared, gripping her hand firmly, reassured her, "Stay behind me, I've got this."
The thugs closed in fast, but Jared was faster, sending one flying with a swift kick. The first thug tumbled into the others, bringing them down in a domino effect. Agnes hadn’t expected Jared to be so skilled. Though she knew he was a fitness coach with some boxing and Sanda training, his proficiency surprised her. With ease, Jared dispatched the group, leaving them groaning on the floor.
Without wasting a moment, Jared turned, grabbed Agnes’s hand, and they dashed outside just as the SWAT team arrived. The chaos inside the bar was none of their concern now; they had made it out.
Jarvis's car was waiting. Seeing Agnes, he opened the door, "Get in."
Agnes and Jared quickly climbed in, and the car vanished into the night. Silence filled the car until they merged onto the highway, blending into the traffic. Only then did Jarvis speak, "Agnes, I'm sorry I couldn't be more visible, but I had to stay undercover."
Agnes reassured him, "I knew I could handle someone like Lanny."
Handing over a piece of paper to Jarvis, she said, "I got the number."
After a brief glance, Jarvis pocketed the paper.
Jared, who had been silent the whole ride, finally spoke, "Can someone please explain what's going on?"
