Agnes couldn't help but feel a wave of emotion wash over her as she pinched Esther's cheeks, saying, "You're such a sweetheart. How about you marry our little Nocturne when you grow up?"
Jared, overhearing the conversation, couldn't resist chiming in, "She's just a kid, Agnes. Why are you matchmaking so early?"
Of course, Agnes was only jesting, simply overwhelmed by how adorable Esther was.
"Sure!"
To everyone's surprise, Esther's response came in a sweet, childlike voice, "When I grow up, I'll marry Nocturne."
Agnes burst into laughter, "Do you even know what getting married means at your age?"
Puffing her cheeks, Esther replied, "Don't underestimate me because I'm young. I know a lot! Getting married means two people eat together, sleep together, and do lots of things together, just like Nocturne and I do now."
Agnes found herself at a loss for words, even thinking there was some wisdom in Esther's words.
Carrying Esther, Agnes moved to the backyard.
Nocturne was still deep in slumber, lying quietly in his bed, his body slightly curled, resembling a baby in the womb. His breathing was steady, and due to his year-round seclusion, his skin was a shade paler than most kids', and his hair had a slight golden hue, reminiscent of a prince from a Western fairy tale. Agnes always felt a pang of heartache seeing him like this.
Inside, Agnes and Esther spent time reading books.
Jared visited an old friend before heading to the kitchen to start preparing dinner.
In the evening, Nocturne woke up to find Agnes beside him, his demeanor more serene than usual, "Mom, you're here."
Agnes stroked Nocturne's hair, "How have you been? Did you miss Mommy?"
