Phoenix scoffed, “Patton, worthy of that title? He’s just a bully who picks on the weak. If it weren’t for that lucky break when he saved Sean, he’d be nothing but a thug with no place at Albert’s Arms.”
So it was true what Kearney said about Honey Badger being Sean’s man.
Agnes was becoming increasingly bewildered.
She couldn’t believe her brother could be involved in drug dealing.
Her heart felt like it was being squeezed.
She didn’t bring up the ongoing police investigation into Honey Badger during dinner.
Dining with Phoenix and Kearney was a rarity in Agnes’s memory.
Especially after learning about Kearney’s deep affections for Phoenix, it made watching the two of them together somewhat bittersweet for Agnes.
In a love triangle, someone always has to let go, to make a sacrifice.
And that’s never easy.
But Kearney did it with a smile.
Agnes couldn’t quite empathize; what Jared and Ryder couldn’t do must be incredibly tough.
Kearney raised his glass, “To Phoenix, may you and the boss live in peace and grow old together.”
Phoenix quickly lifted his own, “Cheers, Kearney.”
He downed his red wine in one go.
Then to Kearney, he said, “We’ve grown up together, and I know all too well what you’ve done for me over the years. I can never repay you in this lifetime. If there’s a next one, I’ll make it up to you.”
Kearney just smiled, “Then I’ll wait for the next life.”
The atmosphere throughout the dinner was a mix of joy and sorrow.
Like a blend of ice and fire.
And Agnes, caught in the middle, could feel Phoenix’s anticipation and happiness towards the wedding, as well as Kearney’s spreading grief and helplessness, as if being pulled by two intense emotions.
After dinner, Agnes stayed with Phoenix for a bit before heading back to Serenity Hall.
Jared was nowhere to be found at Serenity Hall.
She had no idea where he could be.
