Agnes carefully pondered Jared's words. She found some truth in them, but a stubborn sadness still lingered in her heart. Yet, having Jared by her side was like a flicker of light in the dimness of life, offering her a touch of comfort. With a strained smile, Agnes said, "Let's not think about it for now. We'll talk about it later."
Jared suddenly moved in front of Agnes and crouched down. Agnes was slightly surprised, "What are you doing?"
"You silly, I'm going to carry you," Jared said playfully. Agnes's lips curved into a slight smile, and without saying anything, she leaned onto Jared's back. Jared carried Agnes step by step along the beach. Above them, the Starlight International Group sparkled, and the sound of the waves filled their ears. It felt like a romantic dream. Though the world around them was dark, Agnes could feel a real warmth. She knew that if they kept walking, dawn would surely come.
Jared carried Agnes the whole way, and the sound of the waves almost lulled her to sleep. But Agnes thought the scene was too precious to miss, and she didn't want to go back. When Jared asked her, she insisted on waiting for the sunrise. Eventually, they sat down on a rock, with about two hours left until sunrise. Agnes was already very tired. Jared asked if she wanted to go back to sleep, but Agnes stubbornly refused.
After sitting on the rock for a while, Agnes was so drowsy that she couldn't keep her eyes open. Jared let her lie on his lap, took off his jacket, and draped it over her. "Sleep," Jared said gently. Agnes tried to stay awake, "No, I want to wait for the sunrise."
Jared softly patted her shoulder, soothingly like comforting a child, "I'll wake you when the sun rises. For now, just sleep." With Jared's reassurance, Agnes felt as if she had taken a calming pill and fell into a deep sleep.
However, when the sun rose, Jared didn't wake Agnes. When she awoke, the sky was already bright, and the sun was hanging over the sea. Agnes didn't see even a glimpse of the sun leaping from the horizon. She rubbed her eyes and then sat up suddenly. "Why didn't you wake me for the sunrise?" Agnes asked, not really blaming him but feeling a bit regretful.
Jared hadn't fallen asleep. He was quietly looking at the distant sea horizon. Agnes didn't mean to blame him at all; she just felt a little disappointed. Even though they had been married for so many years, they had been apart for four of those years. In Manhattan, Agnes often suffered from insomnia, sometimes watching the sun appear on the horizon, slowly rising among the skyscrapers. She didn't know how many sunrises she had watched alone. And back then, Agnes always thought, if only she had someone with her. If only Jared were by her side.
This time, on such a beautiful island, Agnes felt it was a rare opportunity. But they missed it. Jared, however, didn't seem to mind at all. He said, "You looked so peacefully asleep, I couldn't bring myself to wake you."
Agnes lightly hit Jared, saying, "But you should have woken me up. We missed the sunrise." Jared replied, "It doesn't matter. We have so many days and nights ahead of us. If you want to see the sunrise, I can accompany you to watch it every day." Hearing this, Agnes felt a warm glow in her heart.
