When you think about it, it all makes sense. In the grand scheme of their lives, they had countless opportunities ahead. Missing out this one time wasn't the end of the world. For some reason, Agnes felt a whole lot better.
And just then, a security guard from the island approached: “Miss Septima, we found the man you were looking for.” Agnes was taken aback for a moment. They had found Jarvis.
“Where is he?” she asked.
“Jarvis was in the woods, chopping down trees to make a raft, about to set sail when we found him.”
Agnes stood up, her face lit with anticipation. Sure enough, she saw a group of people escorting Jarvis in their direction.
The guard explained, “It was Miss Septima’s keen eye. Jarvis didn’t trust us at first, nearly got into a scuffle with our guys. But after we mentioned the code word, he agreed to come with us.”
Back when Jarvis was locked in the basement, he had shared some military stories with Agnes. He had mentioned a code word once, offhandedly, and Agnes remembered it. That code word was something only Jarvis and Agnes were privy to. So, mentioning that code word meant safety, that she was looking for him.
Seeing Agnes, Jarvis rushed over. Noticing Jared nearby, Jarvis seemed to instantly understand the situation.
“Ah, Mr. Whitfield came over. And here I was, about to risk it all on a homemade raft to find you. Guess that was a wasted effort,” Jarvis joked.
But Agnes was sincerely grateful to Jarvis. “Jarvis, everything’s been taken care of. I’m really sorry for all the trouble. The drug trafficking case, my godfather’s contacts will liaise with you. We’ll coordinate everything at Albert’s Arms. But regarding Kearney... we have some other plans, and I hope you can understand,” Agnes explained the situation in detail to Jarvis.
Jarvis sighed after listening, “I just wanted to uncover the truth, to stop those people from harming more. Since Mr. Albert is willing to handle this, I don’t need to worry. After all, I’m no longer a cop. From now on, I’ll just focus on being a good security guard for Mr. Whitfield.”
Jared smiled, “I know your heart is not in it. I’m already working on getting your position back. You should hear some news soon.”
Jarvis was surprised. Jared continued, “If the force loses someone like you, it’s a loss for the country and the people. Sure, we’ve resolved things on Albert’s Arms' end, but we still need you for the bigger picture. Just try to keep a lower profile from now on, avoid giving anyone anything to use against you.”
Jarvis was silent for a long moment before finally saying thanks. Jarvis didn’t stay on the island much longer before departing. Agnes had tried to persuade Jared to leave with him. But Jared refused to budge from Agnes’s side. However, he did arrange for Leo to deliver official documents to the island regularly.
The island had a unique way of keeping them isolated from the world. Yet, after two days, Agnes found she quite liked it. After so many years together, their time apart often outnumbered their moments together. Not to mention, enjoying such a rare, shared solitude.
However, the situations with Phenix and Kearney were still far from ideal. Phenix spent most of his time asleep. Kearney seemed to have returned to normalcy. He looked like any other person. All his emotions were carefully hidden behind his calm exterior.
