Heartstrings on Fire novel Chapter 1199

So, she had never been exposed to the darker sides of life. Even the slightest hint of grey seemed monumental to her. Growing up, she was like an unblemished wildflower in a pristine valley. But now, she had transformed into a rose with thorns. Jenny found this intriguing.

Jenny said, "Well, let bygones be bygones. But, Agnes, we each have our perspectives. The world is inherently unfair. You were born with a silver spoon, while I came from nothing. I was merely chasing what I desired. Maybe to you, ladies of privilege, my actions seem despicable, but you weren't in my shoes. I had no other options, no choice. Your criticism comes from never having to face the struggles I did."

Six years ago, Agnes already felt she couldn't comprehend Jenny's worldview. And she still felt the same. But Agnes didn't want to argue over it either.

Agnes said, "Jenny, let's leave the past in the past. You've pursued what you wanted, and I just want a simple life. Let's agree to live and let live, for the sake of our old friendship."

Jenny said, "That's actually what I wanted to say. I didn't come back to stir up trouble with you. As long as you don't stand in my way, we can live our lives without crossing paths again."

Agnes used to think that living without crossing paths again was a curse. But coming from Jenny, it seemed more like a blessing. Because that was the best outcome Agnes could hope for between them.

After the events six years ago, Agnes still harbored some shadows over the concept of friendship. Indeed, Jenny was one of the most influential people in her life. When someone experiences a profound betrayal for the first time, it changes how they view the entire world.

There are generally three outcomes for old acquaintances: reconciliation, deep-seated hatred, or living separate lives. Agnes felt her relationship with Jenny was destined for the third option.

Agnes smiled, her demeanor relaxed and poised, "We've had no dealings with each other for years. How could I possibly stand in your way?"

Jenny asked, "So, guess why I came back?"

At that moment, the waiter arrived. The table was set with exquisite dishes. Silver cloches were lifted to reveal the meals. The air was filled with a rich aroma. The waiter quickly left, allowing Agnes to respond to Jenny's question.

Without haste or rudeness, Agnes cut herself a small piece of steak and said casually, without looking at Jenny, "If I had to guess, it would be because of Mr. Taylor, right?"

Agnes's tone was distant when she mentioned Mr. Taylor, which somehow made Jenny feel slightly better. Jenny admitted, "You're right. I came back for Elton. He returned home a while ago, and as soon as I wrapped up my affairs, I followed. You might not know, but we've kept in close touch all these years abroad."

Agnes was momentarily taken aback by this revelation. She remembered asking Elton once if he had been in contact with Jenny over the years, and he had denied it. Agnes couldn't tell if Jenny was lying or not. But then again, she thought, it probably didn't matter much to her anyway.
