Agnes took another bite of her soft scrambled eggs, feigning surprise as she said, "Oh? Is that so?" Her tone was casual, seemingly uninterested. Jenny wondered if her words had failed to make any impact on Agnes, unsure whether to feel relieved or not.
"Didn't Elton try to reach out to you after he came back?" Jenny asked.
"We did meet a few times because of some matters," Agnes admitted. She didn't want to lie. If the three of them were to meet in the future, and Jenny found out Agnes had deliberately hidden the truth, it would only make her seem guilty and ulterior. So, Agnes chose to be upfront.
Jenny’s face changed instantly. She knew it! Elton’s sudden return had to be connected to this woman in front of her!
"Didn't he tell you anything?" Jenny asked.
Agnes looked up at Jenny, "What do you think he should have told me?"
"Didn't he tell you that I had a daughter for him?" Jenny pressed.
Until now, Agnes had been quite indifferent to Jenny’s remarks. But this statement truly shocked her. Jenny and Elton had a daughter? This was unexpected. Agnes didn’t feel much, just surprise and disbelief. But the more she thought about it, the more she found it improbable.
Agnes had not only met Elton but his parents as well. Hancock Taylor and Riley were breaking their backs over Elton's marriage issues, even coming to her at their wit's end to speak with Elton. The main reason was the Taylor family's tradition of passing down the family business through generations. They desperately wanted a grandchild to continue the legacy. If they knew about Elton having a daughter, they surely wouldn’t be this frantic. It was clear to Agnes; they were unaware. Were they keeping it a secret?
Agnes’s mind was spinning with thoughts. Yet, her expression remained calm, "Really? He never mentioned that to me."
"He wouldn't tell you, because he still has feelings for you. But next time you see him, I hope you'll ask him directly. I'm sure he won't deny it," Jenny said.
Agnes laughed, "Why should I ask? It's none of my business. I have a loving husband and children, a happy family. Your complications with him have nothing to do with me." Agnes's indifference was clear.
Jenny continued, "I understand your stance, and I'm not worried about you harboring any feelings for Elton. But what if he pursues you again, wouldn't you be tempted?"
Agnes reacted as if she heard a joke. "Jenny, I know what you're worried about, but you can be completely at ease. Not to mention my deep love for my husband, if I had wanted to reconcile with Elton, it would've happened years ago. As for now, Elton is just another stranger to me. Please, keep me out of your issues with him, thank you."
Agnes had thought Jenny and Elton wouldn't have kept in touch, especially since Jenny had married Mr. Wilson. And she hadn’t heard anything about Mrs. Wilson having a child. But if it were true, the situation was far more complicated than imagined. After all, matters of the heart are intricate. Agnes didn’t want to judge. She had long decided not to be dragged into this whirlpool.
Yet, Jenny stared at Agnes firmly and said, "I don't believe you."
