Heartstrings on Fire novel Chapter 418

Agnes Pritchard lowered her head, her voice noticeably weaker than before, "Since you know everything, you should understand that the hatred for my mother's death has made it impossible for me to coexist with your sister, or to become family with her brother. I don't want to be a burden to you. Let's break up peacefully before my hatred shifts onto you."

But Jared Whitfield took the floor and said, "Even if you want to shift your hatred onto me, that's okay, Agnes. But I will absolutely never divorce you. This is a dispute from our parents' generation, and it shouldn't be on us to bear. As for my sister, she made an unforgivable mistake, your mother died because of her. But so many years have passed, all we can do now is try our best to make amends."

When Agnes heard Jared speak so casually and even defend Alyssa Whitfield, a wave of anger surged within her.

Agnes suddenly scoffed, "Make amends? This is a human life we're talking about. How do you plan to make up for that?"

Jared was silent for a moment.

Then he stepped forward, grasping Agnes' hand, "I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you, Agnes. Let the past be the past. If you can't forgive my sister, I won't force you. But she and I are two different individuals. You can't just give up on our marriage because of the past. Agnes, I can't live without you."

If it had been before, hearing Jared say these sweet words might have made Agnes very happy.

But then, all she felt was deep sadness.

Agnes pulled her hand away from Jared's and said, "Jared, ask your conscience. If you were in my shoes, would you let this go easily? Jared, I'm telling you, I can't let this go. I want a divorce, that's just the first step. Don't think that I will let Alyssa off the hook. Furthermore, I just don't want anything to do with the Whitfield family. My mother died with a grudge, yet your sister is living so freely. I won't let her live so comfortably. Everyone who makes a mistake should pay the price."

Jared's face darkened, "What are you planning to do?"

"You don't need to worry about what I'm planning, Jared. Whether you want to protect your sister or if we become enemies in the future, that's all for later. Right now, I just want to divorce you. It's ridiculous that I've been sharing a bed with my enemy's brother for so long."

Jared seemed a bit shaken and asked, "What if I don't agree to the divorce?"

Agnes laughed, "Then how about I become Ryder Whitfield's girlfriend?"

"Agnes, what did you say?" Jared's pupils contracted as he asked incredulously.

"Didn't you hear me? I want to get back at Alyssa. Isn't using Ryder the best way? He still has feelings for me, if I agreed to be with him and then deeply hurt him, wouldn't Alyssa feel very painful? Or I could instigate a rupture between mother and son. Alyssa killed my mother, so I should hurt her biological son. Don’t you think this is fair?"

As she said this, Agnes felt like a madwoman.

In fact, she had thought of many ways to take revenge on Alyssa those past few days.

But she had never thought of using Ryder.

When she saw Jared, however, she just ended up blurting it out.
