Evadne, with her damp hair still unwrapped from a quick shower, donned her cashmere coat over her robe and jumped into her Bugatti, heading towards the hotel in a flash.
On the way, she did something out of ordinary and called her ex-husband, Thaddeus.
At that moment, Thaddeus was on a business trip to WillowBrook City, a hundred kilometers away from Elmsworth.
The Abernathy Group had purchased a plot of land on the outskirts for a spa resort, which was now under construction.
Thaddeus and Gordon, both wearing yellow safety helmets, had come to the construction site to inspect the progress, led by the project manager.
As Gordon held the flashlight for him to check the blueprints, Thaddeus's phone rang.
Annoyed, Thaddeus scowled and pulled out his phone.
On the screen, Evadne's name glowed like a gold-rimmed jewel in the night.
Thaddeus' breath hitched, his heart pounding. His hand trembled slightly as he held the phone.
"It's Mrs. Abernathy!" exclaimed Gordon, excitement painted across his face.
"I know, stop making a fuss." Thaddeus feigned calmness, about to answer the call.
However, his fingers, stiff from the cold and his nervousness, slipped.
Incredibly, he just hung up the call!
"Mr. Thaddeus! How could you hang up on Mrs. Abernathy? She wouldn't call you for no reason. What if something happened?!" Gordon's voice echoed in the silent night.
Thaddeus was also a bit flustered, cursing his clumsy hands for failing him at such a crucial time!
But luckily, Evadne called back right away.
"Hello." This time he didn't mishandle the call, his voice slightly hoarse.
"Well, you picked up." Evadne's voice was pleasant, but her tone was sarcastic.
"You called. Of course I would answer." Thaddeus responded sincerely.
"Mr. Thaddeus, you don't have to sweet talk. We were married for three years. I know what kind of person you are. This isn't the first time you hung up on me." Evadne's laugh was cold and bitter.
Thaddeus was confused, "When did I hang up on you? I never did that."
"Fine. I'm not here to rehash old grievances."
Evadne's voice was cold and distant, "I'm here to tell you to make some time in the next few days to deal with Jareth's mess!"
"What happened to Jareth? Did he upset you?" Thaddeus's expression turned icy.
"Upset me? He's now haunting the cemetery! It's about Marilla!"
Evadne's teeth gritted with frustration, "Jareth got Marilla drunk, took her to my hotel, and the whole thing was caught by Jason!"
"What?"
Thaddeus was taken aback, shaking his head, "Jareth is not that kind of person."
Evadne scoffed, "Well, anyone who is friends with you, can't be a good person."
"Evadne." Thaddeus sighed, a hint of reproach in his tone.
"I'm on my way to the Hotel now, hoping that bastard Jareth still has some humanity left, or I'll make him the last eunuch in Windhelm!"
Evadne's voice was filled with fury, "I will keep this incident under wraps to protect Marilla's reputation. Now, come over here, I'll get Marilla out, and you need to take her home right away! Don't alert anyone else!"
Then she hung up, not wasting another word with him.
Thaddeus stared at the blackened screen, his lips pursing in disappointment.
He suddenly remembered when they were still married, Evadne would often call him for no apparent reason.
He never found it annoying, but he was always indifferent towards her.
In his memory, he never hung up on her. Was she mistaken?
"Something bad happened to Marilla, I need to go back to Elmsworth right away." Thaddeus was skeptical of Evadne's words but he needed to check on Marilla since Evadne had asked him to.
"Now?"
Gordon glanced at his watch, looking troubled, "It's 200 kilometers from WillowBrook City to Elmsworth! The highway is under construction. It will take more than two hours to get back. We won't make it in time! Why don't we notify her mother? After all, Marilla is her biological daughter."
"Evadne is already on her way, Marilla should be safe with her, but I need to go back, to help clean up the mess."
Thaddeus fell silent, then asked, "There's a helicopter on the roof of the Abernathy Group's department store in WillowBrook City, isn't there?"
"There is, but where can we find a pilot at this hour?" Gordon seemed troubled again.
Thaddeus squinted, "I'll do it."
