Jareth's eyes bulged in disbelief as he looked at the striking pair that resembled an epitome of beauty.
At first glance, Thaddeus's words seemed harmless. But paired them with his intense gaze and deep voice, it reeked of unrequited love.
Well, that was not right.
Being in love stunk, but unrequited love just. stunk!
Jareth cursed his luck for not having his phone with him. Otherwise, he would have snapped a picture of Thaddeus's lovelorn expression. It would be fun to tease him and show him how pathetic he looked!
"Besides, you really have no memory."
Thaddeus's handsome brows furrowed, his eyes burning with anger, "I told you not to mess with Marilla, but you insisted on testing the boundaries of ous. Do you think getting slapped three times is unfair? I think it's too lenient. I should slap you every time I see you."
Us?
A strange feeling surged in Evadne's heart. She felt uncomfortable with Thaddeus's familiarity.
He used to avoid her like the plague, fearing any association with her. How did he become so friendly?
"Mr. Thaddeus, watch your words. You are you, I am I. Don't lump us together," Evadne said coldly, turning on her heel to walk towards the bedroom, "Otherwise, I'll feel insulted."
Thaddeus awkwardly bit his lip.
Jareth broke into a wide grin, "Hey! Your attempt to get close failed, huh? Serves you right!"
But his joy was short-lived.
Thaddeus gritted his teeth and punched Jareth in his abs. The pain was so intense that he felt his soul leave his body.
Evadne rushed to the bedroom.
Her mind was spinning with all kinds of scenarios as she walked the short distance. She dreaded what she might see when she opened the door.
If it was as she feared, Jareth would pay tonight!
Thaddeus wouldn't be able to protect him!
"Marilla!"
Evadne barged into the room, only to stop in her tracks.
The room was serene, nothing like the chaos she had pictured.
The sweet scent of Marilla's perfume filled the room, and the soft light from the bedside lamp illuminated Marilla's peaceful face as she slept. It was a picture of perfect tranquility.
Evadne walked to the bedside quietly and knelt down, gently caressing Marilla's warm cheek.
Seeing the teddy bear Marilla was clutching, she felt a lump in her throat. Her eyes welled up with tears.
She was a fearless woman who thrived in chaos, but this sight was too much for her.
Thaddeus walked in just then, and saw her crying. His heart clenched, and he struggled to swallow.
Evadne heard his footsteps and quickly wiped her eyes.
Thaddeus cleared his throat and reached out to touch her wet hair.
"Dry your hair. It's cold outside. You'll catch a cold if you go out like this."
"I don't need your help."
She stood up abruptly, eager to avoid any inappropriate contact with him.
Thaddeus's heart was in turmoil. He couldn't understand his actions or his feelings anymore.
"Jareth didn't do anything to Marilla. You can rest easy. He might be a troublemaker, but he knows Marilla is my sister."
"You can't trust men. Neither their words nor their actions," Evadne retorted coldly.
Knowing that arguing with her wouldn't help, Thaddeus turned and walked towards the bathroom.
He came back a few seconds later with a towel.
"Dry your hair before you go."
"I told you, I don't."
Before she could finish, Thaddeus placed the towel on her head and started drying her hair.
Evadne froze. She felt her heart flutter.
This was Thaddeus? Was he the same Thaddeus who never even poured her a glass of water?
