"Marilla, how many times have I told you not to drop your cutlery at the dinner table? It's simply ill-mannered!" Elspeth chastised Marilla sternly.
"Oh, come on, it's just a fork! Must you yell at the child?" He doted on his granddaughter, came to Marilla’s defense.
Elspeth's hand clenched under the table. It seemed that in front of him, even breathing was a mistake.
"I'm done eating." Marilla, her cheeks burning in embarrassment, mumbled before hurriedly leaving the table.
As Marilla left, Thaddeus watched her, deep in thought. Meanwhile, a satisfied smirk played on Glynnis’ lips.
She thought, "Marilla, you could have lived a quiet life at home, without having to face such humiliation. Unfortunately, you overstepped boundaries and messed with my man, so it's only right that I teach you a lesson. Let's see who is the apple of our parents' eyes, and who is worthy of Mr. Jareth!"
"Wait, Jareth?" Hamiltion looked puzzled. "I thought Jareth was keen on Ilana."
Everyone else at the table turned green at his words. It felt like a flock of crows had just flown over their heads.
Thaddeus was in the middle of sipping his water when Hamiltion's words made him choke. He coughed violently, almost spitting out his water.
"Grandpa, how can Mr. Jareth possibly like Evadne?" Glynnis burst out angrily, her face red with fury.
"Didn't he show interest in Ilana? I may be eighty, but my eyes and ears are still sharp. I noticed how attentive Jareth was to Ilana at my birthday party. He was so attached to her that it seemed like he wanted to glue himself to her. He's likely to be one of those husbands who can't live without his wife."
His sharp gaze then turned to Thaddeus, "I was even thinking of matching Ilana with Jareth. The Fairhaven family is a good match for Ilana. Most importantly, Jareth treats Ilana very well. If Ilana and Jareth get together, they would definitely live a comfortable and joyous life."
Comfortable, joyous? How could Jareth and Evadne ever lead such a life?
Thaddeus felt like crushing the cup in his hand.
"Grandpa! Am I your granddaughter or is Evadne?" Glynnis was on the verge of tears. "I am the one who likes Mr. Jareth now, not Evadne! Shouldn't you be supporting me? Why would you want to pair him with her?"
"Do you like Jareth? But does Jareth like you?" Hamiltion questioned her sternly.
Glynnis was at a loss for words.
"That night at my birthday party, I saw how Jareth treated you. Did you two even talk? Did Jareth even glance at you?"
Glynnis clenched her teeth in humiliation, but she couldn't refute his words. They were true.
"We can't force a relationship, Glynnis. It won't be sweet if it's forced. And with Jareth's fiery temper, you two will be at each other’s throats within days of getting married."
"Grandpa!" Glynnis was close to tears.
"Dad, don't pressure Glynnis like this. It's not fair to ask a girl such questions." Frederic intervened, "Jareth does care about Glynnis. He even made a special trip to our house to talk to her. Elspeth and I saw it."
Glynnis's heart skipped a beat at the mention of that day. She knew Jareth despised her, but so what? Once she married him, she would slowly win him over with her charm.
"Is that so?" Hamiltion stroked his chin thoughtfully.
"Yes, Dad." Elspeth chipped in, "Mr. Jareth is a very distinguished man. When has he ever made the effort to visit a young lady at her house? His visit to Glynnis shows his interest in her. And dad, even though you want to match Evadne with Mr. Jareth, I've heard that Evadne is seeing someone else."
At this, Thaddeus looked sharply at Elspeth. His icy gaze sent a chill down her spine, but she continued, "It's Mr. Avery, the youngest son of the Chambers Group."
Hamiltion was shocked, "Ilana has a boyfriend? Who?"
"It's Avery Chambers, the youngest son of the Chambers Group," Elspeth replied hastily.
