The room fell into a dead silence, then exploded with deafening gasps.
"Alea... Evadne is Alea?"
Thaddeus' mind buzzed, blanking for a few seconds, as if his very soul beneath his skin was shivering, rippling, eventually shattered into fragments suspended in outer space. His whole body felt light and his limbs powerless.
Evadne was Alea.
She was the revered legend of the jewelry industry!
So, all this time, she had been watching him make a fool of himself. Watching him go to great lengths to meet Alea, only to be turned down time and time again. She must have found it hilarious!
Thaddeus was panting heavily, his lips trembling. His eyes were blazing with fury or shock, he couldn't tell which was stronger.
"Evadne... you've tricked me again... you've actually tricked me again!"
She had an unparalleled talent, yet she hid it from him perfectly.
Throughout their three years of marriage, she had shed her legendary persona and quietly stood by his side, fulfilling duties of a typical housewife...
Why would she demean herself like this? Was this her way of mocking his ignorance?
Thaddeus clenched his teeth, his heart aching as he covered the left side of his chest.
He thought, "Is this amusing to you, Evadne? You have never been honest with me. How dare you hope that I might fall in love with you?"
"Alea? Miss Ashbourne is Alea? This is groundbreaking news!"
"It can't be fake, can it?"
"The diamond necklace could be a fake, but the person can't be! Liva is here, it's all genuine! It can't be fake anymore!"
The room, usually filled with dignified individuals, was now a frenzy. They whipped out their phones, snapping photos of Evadne.
This was the real, up-close-and-personal Alea. They had to take as many photos as possible to show off later. Otherwise, what was the point of being here tonight?
Avery watched Evadne, surrounded and adored like a star in the sky, a smile playing on his lips.
No other woman could give him such a thrill, except for Evadne.
And only Evadne made him feel that love, as an act, was not so dull and ridiculous.
The scene was getting out of hand.
In an effort to get closer to the goddess, the crowd around Evadne was getting tighter.
Avery frowned, sensing danger. He rose, intending to help her.
Suddenly, a cold gust of wind blew past him. He glanced sideways and saw Thaddeus rushing forward, pushing through the crowd and forcing his way in.
He clenched his fist, his eyes sharp as a hawk's. He wished he could tear Thaddeus apart.
