But Lydia Song was still looking at her across the table!
Elizabeth Liang made up her mind and picked up a piece of food from a nearby dish. When she was about to put it into James Lu's bowl, James suddenly turned his head and ate the food from her chopsticks.
Not only was Elizabeth stunned, John Lu and Lydia also looked surprised.
After a long pause, the shock disappeared from Lydia's face as she said happily, "Your dad and I couldn't believe it when you said that you were getting married, but... now I see that you've really found a girl you love, I'm so happy for you!"
James raised his eyebrows. "Am I that untrustworthy? Well, do you believe me now?"
Blushing, Elizabeth stared blankly at her chopsticks. Did they just touch his lips?
If that's the case... then was that... an indirect kiss?
After dinner, everyone sat in the living room, and Lydia made a pot of her best floral fruit tea.
Elizabeth felt a little queasy as she sat on the sofa.
And it was not because she was too full.
She still hasn't recovered from the chopstick incident, and now she was sitting right next to James. There was ample room on the sofa, why did he have to be so close to her? James had one hand in his pocket and the other casually placed on Elizabeth's shoulder, and he would occasionally touch her earlobe or push her hair back with it...
James was wearing perfume, it wasn't strong, but at this proximity, the faint scent of pinewood mixed with tobacco invaded Elizabeth's senses.
The two smells combined weren't bad, in fact, it was strangely pleasant.
"Looking at how lovey-dovey you two are making me want to date again too." Lydia looked longingly at James & Elizabeth embracing each other.
Elizabeth blushed. Were they being that blatant?
James, however, said flippantly, "Mrs. Song, please look at your husband's face before you speak."
As expected, John's face was full of displeasure. He glared at Lydia, then pulled her closer to him and handed her a cup of fruit tea.
"Are you two sure about the marriage?" John put down the teacup after Lydia had finished, then looked at James. He was already imposing and adding to that his serious tone, the relaxed air in the room suddenly tensed up.
James did not answer immediately. He touched Elizabeth's cheek and asked, "What do you think?"
John looked straight at Elizabeth. "I've heard that you are still in school, young lady, and you look very young. Are you absolutely certain about this?"
When Lydia came back from the hospital, she asked someone to investigate Elizabeth's background.
The down and out the daughter of the Liang family who had been swept out of her own door.
He wouldn't ask directly about his son's partner, instead, he would secretly find out about them on his own.
A few days ago, he and his driver followed Elizabeth as she walked. She looked modest and was quite pretty, no wonder Jimmy took a liking to her. He then saw her turn and enter the food market, then walk back home with a reasonable amount of fresh produce. There was quite a bit of distance between the market and South Lake Villa, but she never stopped a taxi. She rested a few times on the way when she got tired.
Pure, provident, and practical. Very good.
John was not someone who looked down on the poor or was preoccupied with social rank. After all, with the Lu family's current status, a marriage of equal standing could be the icing on the cake, but an ordinary daughter-in-law was not at all a burden. When it came to his only son's partner for life, he could ignore her family background, but she at least had to be a good girl who came from an upright family.
Hearing John's question, Elizabeth immediately understood that John had already done some research.
She nodded and answered respectfully but with conviction, "Yes."
