Astrid chuckled as she read Jay's email and languidly typed her response. "Why the refund? I've done my part. This is the real deal on Astrid's vanishing act over the years. And come on, Astrid smashing concrete with her bare chest – if that's not headline-worthy, what is? Just look at the trending topics blowing up!"
Jay's irritation flared upon seeing the trending tab ablaze with Astrid's feats. His fingers trembled with anger as he shot back a reply. "I hired you to dig up dirt on Astrid, not to unearth stuff that would make her a social media sensation! If you don't give me a refund, I'll expose you for the fraud you are, and you'll never work in this industry again!"
Astrid laughed outright when she saw his threat. "Go ahead, make my day. I dare you to try and expose me!"
The next email arrived before Jay could even compose himself.
Aster: "Refunding you is out of the question. Take another look at our contract. I've fulfilled every term. If you want your money back, I'll see you in court."
Jay, shaking with rage, reread the contract meticulously, only to realize that Aster was right. The agreement had been to uncover major scoops about Astrid's past and her entrance into the entertainment world, including any potential scandals.
But Aster had held up their end of the bargain. As for any insinuations of impropriety, Aster pointed out that all of Astrid's gigs were secured by her agent, Dale. Since there was no romantic connection between Dale and Astrid, the notion of any underhanded dealings was baseless.
Jay had paid Aster, paid Lyle for insider tips, and even shelled out for trending spots—all of which had inadvertently dressed Astrid in glory.
With his body aching from tension, Jay was jolted by a call from Bernice.
Recalling the promises he had made to Bernice, his hands shook slightly as he answered, "Hello, Ms. Bernice."
